I grew up in the suburbs of NYC, but moved away long before my photography hobby took hold. I've also been back numerous times, but never had time to actually pay the store a visit. Well as luck would have it, I was in NYC yesterday by myself with absolutely nothing to do until my 9pm flight out of Newark. Turns out it was MUCH closer than I had remembered seeing it years ago, its not even a 5 minute walk from Penn station.
Words cannot describe how amazing that store is. I think overwhelming would be the closest I can come. Its like their catalog just exploded over a gigantic store. You could try out pretty much everything, and they sell pretty much everything. I started out in Headphones, trying out 20-30 different models ranging from $20, up to the $1399 Sennheiser HD800 they had just sitting there, begging for me to take a listen. I then wandered through speakers, camcorders, tv's, computers, till I finally hit the jackpot, Photography. I spent a good hour in the photography section alone. Pretty much had every lens i've ever pined over on display, every body i've ever read about, aisles and aisles of bags and tripods. I've been to some dedicated photography stores before, but nothing of this magnitude. I literally got to play with every single photography thing i've ever wanted to.
I finally got to play with the Sony NEX5 and I walked away very impressed. It was actually much smaller than I was expecting and felt very good in the hand. They had both the 16mm and 18-55mm kits on display and while the 18-55 would no doubt be more versatile, for the size alone the 16mm was enticing. Navigating the menus/buttons would certainly take some getting used to, but it was workable. The NEX3 felt noticeably cheap in comparison.
Anyway, just wanted to share. If you go to NYC, go to B&H, don't even question it. I will make it a regular stop every time i go back from now on.
