Finally got the specs together for my new computer - LMK what you think

Aopen AX4C Mobo $219.00
TV LEADTEK WINFAST "DELUXE" TV2000XP $54.99
FIC Radeon 9500 Pro $175.00
Intel Pentium 4 / 3.06GHz $398.00
CORSAIR 256MB PC2700 DDR (2x) $112.00
MAXTOR 120.0GB $130.00
HITACHI CML174SXWB $499.00
PIONEER DVD-RECORDABLE MODEL DVR $244.00
Audigy Gamer $87.00

Any comments? The only question I have is I heard that the 800 mhz FSB processors aren't going to be available, however, the 533 mhz ones could be run at 800 mhz, anyone know if this is true? If it isn't, I will simply get a different motherboard (or wait for 800 mhz) 🙂

Oh, please don't recommend anything other than Intel. Sorry, I want an intel system this time around even if AMD is cheaper.

Thanks 🙂

The 533 chips are not multiplier unlocked so they would have to be run at 4.6gig to run on a 800mhz fsb. Your memory (if its good) should run at DDR400 speeds if thats what you were asking, but the processor won't make it that far.

I have heard alot of bad things about the audigy cards, I think the audigyII cards are ok though. Or you could go Turtle Beach (that will be the direction I go next probably, unless there is a better low cost card available when I get ready).

The thing about the 800 mhz fsb is it isn't really 800 mhz. I think the CPU runs at 133 mhz and then Intel does some crazy stuff to give it an "effective" 800 mhz fsb. If anyone knows any more about it, please LMK.

Why not goto PC3200? If your really trying to run 800mhz fsb your going to need it. Also you may consider getting a Radeon 9600 if you read the hardocp overclocking article seams to be easily overclockable to within 90% of the 9700 pro, (I would rather get a hackable 9500 non-pro but they have limited availability now). And the 9600s should be available within a month.

Also like you obviously have quite a lot of money to blow why not go with a WD Rapter 10krpm SATA drive? I mean ultimate primary disk performance.

Or even go with a Radeon 9800 🙂

Well, i agree with the pc3200, that was an error on my part. As for the gfx card - I really want this system to be 110% stable. I can't stand a system crashing or locking up for any reasons and my current one is horrible. Therefore, I don't want to overclock or unlock anything... As for the SATA, i just can't justify the cost. This system is going to be a present from my parents and, although they said to build exactly what I want, The things I have in the system I will actually be using. I'm also going to be kicking some money into it, so I don't want to drive the cost up rediculously. The system, as configured, comes in at about 2,000 dollars which, although expensive, is a pretty good price.

Can anyone answer my question about the 800 mhz FSB?

The 800mhz FSB will have a 200mhz FSB QUAD PUMPED, for an effective 800mhz. If it was just a simple 800mhz FSB, it would probably achieve almost the same results. If I were you, I'd wait for an 800mhz FSB. Oh and once it comes out, why not get a 2.8ghz chip with the same things? It'll be a ton cheaper than the 3.06ghz chip. If you have the money, wait a week or so and pick up a 3.0Cghz chip from Intel. Personally, I think its worth the wait.

Well, I'm not running out and purchasing this tomorrow, it is basically what I will be buying though.

Why should I pick up a 2.8 ghz chip? Is there going to be a signficant price drop?

Thanks for the reply 🙂

Nice system, and its really not that expensive for what your getting. I'm assuming the HITACHI CML174SXWB $499.00 is a monitor, so that means the system is really only $1500. However, if you don't need it in the next week or so, wait for the 800 mhz FSB. I'd think going with a 2.8 Ghz with a 800 fsb will be (most likely) faster than a 3.06 w. 533 fsb. Definately go with a canterwood board, no matter which way u go with the CPU, this way u can upgrade latter. Get DDR 400 now, so you will already have the ram when u upgrade.

never buy 256mb dimms. they are too dinky, waste of dimm slots. when you want to upgrade ram later u'll regret it. plus, i t sucks for hand me down systems. u should get 1gb these days anyways considering memory is so cheap and certain games already benifit.

Well, the boards im looking at have 4 RAM slots, so I would be looking at 4x 256 MB or 4x 512 mb. If you guys think that 1 gig will make the difference, I will go 2x 512 and only use one channel of DDR.

SnowBoarder9455: I was really surprised when I priced teh system out. $1500 is a lot of money in anybody's book, but, for what i would be getting, which is basically top of the line, it's a damn good price.

Thanks guys

Audigy 1 has had problems, get an audigy 2 as they have better output, and sound much much much better. They cause no stability issues that i know of (intel board, and proc)

Another good call. I agree, I think I added the Audigy by accident, I will update to Audigy 2.

oh yeah, the dvd-r drive can be found at office max quite often for a lot less rebadged as Cendyne. Normally after rebate and coupon (maybe price match) you can get it for under 170$ identicle drive normally, just rebadged as cendyne, check out the hot deals.

And the 9500 pro, is going to become very difficult to find, because that was just a hold over until the 9600 came out.

Is the mobo a springdale mobo? or sis 655? i believe the sis 655 compares quite well with the springdale chipset. and they cost less, just check it out. i am not sure exactly what mobo that is so i was just thinking.

go with kingston HyperX pc3000 as it is less exspensive than XMS, and performs as well.

I also believe, that next week you can get a 120gb HD for 40$ at office max w/ PM, rebate. Good deal there (check out hot deals)

No other suggestions
