FINALLY Got Red Hat installed on my Alpha

I painstakingly went through the MILO miniloader install process and I now have a WinNT/Redhat 7 dual-boot Alpha server!!! I didn't really play with it, I just let it start up and then did the obligatory 'startx'.

One question remains: Will I be able to run a half-life server?

In NT yeah, but it will probably be slow since you'll need to run it with the FX!32 layer. Under Linux, nope.

This is the problem with proprietary software, it can easily limit your options.

Maybe you can try installing WINE and see about running 1/2life from there. Just a guess; I haven't tried myself, although, I'm running wine on Mandr8k.

I really don't know how powerful this thing is now. I'm gonna go get a "Linux For Dummies" from the library before I really start foolin' around with it.

I read somewhere that Compaq/DEC had ported some sort of code over to Linux that made use of the FX!32 libraries to get some sort of x86 emulation on linux. I won't bother trying to find it right now cuz I really don't know how to install software (haven't even figured out the RPM method!)

The next project for this Alpha is puttin Win2k on the NT drive...

Last time I checked, the Alpha binaries weren't available for Win2k or XP. If you are going to stick with the Alpha, you are stuck with NT and all the Unix variants (not bad if you ask me), but Win2k is just not going to work (unless they have Alpha binaries, but they didn't a week ago on msdn).

MICROSOFT has ended all development for all platforms other than Intel X86 as of about 18 months ago...

They ended development because the demand for ms on non intel based systems blew.. it was a wise decision on their part.. Overwhelming demand for New Technology products came from intel based customers. I really don't blame them.

While you may not consider an 8 way enterprise, it technically is.. I believe. And last I checked the xeon supported 8 way?

Yeah there are 8 and more procsessor Xeons as I recall, but because of the bus that Intel runs them with it doesn't scale as well as a Alpha or Sparc
