Well, I finally decided to spend some money, and get myself a decent watch. I opted to spend more money and get a Seiko, than stick with your run of the mill Fossil Watch. Now, I go to the Macy's in the mall near my house. I look at the display of Seiko's that they have set up. When I looked at them all, I found three that I liked, and that fit me nicely. At this time, I wasn't looking at price, just trying on, and seeing how they fit, and if the functions they had would be useful to me. So then I looked at the price, and saw they all were $375.00. I figure okay, this is a watch I plan to have through college (I am a senior in High School), if not after college also. The reason I decided on Seiko was my grandfather got the Seiko Presidents watch (named that because Reagan wore it, or so my grandfather said), and that watch is over 20 years old, and works perfectly.

So now after having those three to choose from, I narrowed it to the one I liked most. The woman brings it to the register and scans it, and lo and behold, it was on an unadvertised sale. So this took the $375 price and brought it down to $281.25. Now, I also had a $25.00 off coupon that my mother gave me. After using that, the price became $256.25. When all was said and done, the final price was $278.67 with tax. Now, this was a savings of $118.75 if it were not on sale, and I didd not have the coupon. All in all, I think I came out a winner

Just in case anyone was wondering, this is the watch I got.

Very nice. Only real "issue" I see with it is that it's not kinetic, but the kinetic arctura equivalent would have been $650 or $600, so you saved a good chunk for what is a pretty useless feature to most people.

The biggest thing with that, besides being a sharp looking chrono, is that for $250 you got a seiko with a saphire face. Those faces are darn near indestrucable, and you won't have to worry about scratching the face to hell and having to resurface it. I'm a college student now and just this past xmas decided to trop the change into getting a nice Seiko :p well worth the investment.

Yeah, the woman showed me the kinetic, but to me that's not a useful feature. It's not that much out of the way to go to a jeweler and have a new battery put in. Plus like you said, it's the saphire crystal face, so that was a very nice bonus. Like i said, I think I got an awesome deal in the end, considering I was ready to buy one at full price. Which Seiko did you get?

One thing to keep in mind about Kinetic is that when batteries are changed on normal watches, they often cannot guarantee waterproofness any longer. With Kinetic watches you don't have to worry about that since the case never needs opening.

EDIT: meant to say, definitely an excellent choice on your part. My dream is to get an Arctura, but they're a little out of my price range as it is. I love looking at watches though. :)

Well, look at the price of the Arctura's that stonecold3169 mentioned. They are $650. Compared the the $250ish I payed before tax, that is a big difference. Not guaranteeing waterproofness after a battery change isn't a big deal to me for a few reasons. A) I have been told batteries in Seiko's last many years, and B) I don't plan to go swimming with the watch. The most water it will probably see is when washing my hands, some water may hit it.

ripped. could have gotten a nicer kinetic for way less on eBay.

Although I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on anything but an automatic or even mechanical mechanical watch. Tissot, a wonderful swiss watchmaker, has the 75th anniversery Le Locle for about $350. Automatic and will last several lifetimes. There is also something more elegant about a sweep hand too.

My Watch

It was an xmas gift from my mother and father. I collect various watches and have a collection of around 20 now, and this is sorta the centerpiece (well, I have a Gucci that I picked up while I was in Italy, that was dirt cheap there and appraises for a whole lot more here).

They were only willing to drop that kind of money on a watch if it was something truely unique, and my dad loves the kinetic feature, so thats the line I looked at. I almost went with the auto-relay ones, but honestly... how often am I going to let the extended 6-month kinetic charge die in this where it needs to set itself again? Another useless feature for another $100 or so. We got mine from a jewler right before xmas (The 20th of december or so) and there was a 25% off promotion and we talked for a bit and he ended up selling to me a tad cheaper, at $275 total before taxes, which I thought was fair enough. At the time they were more expensive on ebay even.

And, in regards to DigDug, all of the seiko forums I frequent say to avoid ebay for even "lesser" brands like seiko now as the conterfeiting is trickling down more and more, and in some cases quite convincingly. Also, a "way nicer for way less" kinetic on ebay will not have the saphire face on it, which was one of the tope 3 selling points to me. Also, the newer kinetics like mine use a battery in it which charges with the kinetic movement, anything beyond 2 gens back uses capacitors wich are known to go bad, and then the capacitor is model specific... good luck getting replacements! Besides, 90% of the seikos on ebay are those nasty tacky looking two tone watches which look alright in a suit but just look cheap as a sports watch.

PS: Marauder, so you're gonna be going to RPI, huh? We'll be officially each ther's rivals then:D... I go to Clarkson University and our RPI hockey games always get crazy heated... To this day I'll never really understand why we're each others enemies, haha

came out a winner, eh?

I'd certainly like to know what makes one watch worth more than another. It's not like they even use precious metals for the case, or anything. $200.00 for a watch isn't too bad, but is more than I'd spend unless the case was gold, or something. I'll NEVER understand how they get the prices into the several thousand dollar range... and people BUY them!
