Finally got frustrated enough with my Intellimouse Explorer. I smashed it with a hammer.. (Now with pics!).

I have an Intellimouse Explorer that has a loose wire somewhere because it would intermitantly work/not work depending on which direction i was moving it. Then it stopped working alltogether. Now I have a MS Optical Wheel Mouse and the Logitech Cordless Mouse that was on sale at Staples last week.

This is a common defect in the 1st generation Intella Mice. Warranty it and get the Box that has the 33% more tracking Label on the box. This is the 2nd Generation and is free of that defect.

To clear up some misinformation here...

#1) I hit the mouse when it was on my desk with a Craftsman claw hammer. The odd shape caused the hammer to glance off, hit the wall, and blow apart into the pieces you see here. It worked before (Although crappy. No one should be forced to have to use this one. It needed a quick death.) Now the camera part is destroyed and the PCB snapped where the switch goes for right click.

#2) The above incident left a 3/4" gash in my wall that I now have to fix, plus a dent in my $600 desk where the hammer hit.

#3) I plan on sending this thing BACK to Microsoft and getting a replacement so I can get some of my $$$ back, minus around $30. This was the worst mouse I ever bought.

#4) The intent with the hammer was to disable the mouse, not blast the damn thing though my desk. :D This gave me an excuse to go buy a Logitech (Which I am absolutely fond off)

#5) Read this, and read this well... YOU CANNOT PUT A BLUE LIGHT IN A MICROSOFT MOUSE!! The bottom plastic is dyed red, and the blue LED is, well, blue. This makes the color not a purple as you would expect, but a VERY dim redish/purple (More red than purple) I tried this hack a long time ago when the thing first started acting screwey. It don't work as well as you would think.

Just a thought - did you ever think of calling Microsoft and taking advantage of the 5 Year warranty this mouse has before you "smashed" it?????

I have done so about four weeks ago and received a brand new, second generation mouse in less than seven days. Honestly, if I were the guy receiving your "claim" with a broken PCB, I'd call you and ask "are you serious about this"?

Which they will probably do...

How to RMA your Microsoft Mouse

Here's the first number to call where you explain your problem and they give you a case #

1-425-454-2030

Then they have you call this # to get a RMA

1-800-370-9255

You don't even need the old POS. When your new mouse arrives, sell it!

Cheers!

SVTPower and sharkeeper, thanks for the info. I will try to get a new mouse from Microsoft. Then maybe I'll smash the broken one. ;)

BTW, do any of you who have this mouse feel that the two side buttons are kinda loose...not that they'd come off, but that they wiggle a bit? Maybe this prob was corrected in the 2nd gen.
