I saw it live in London this summer and have owned the original cast recording (Brightman) for years....

Got around to watching the movie in HD last week.

Honestly, i was VERY impressed.

While Brightman has an AMAZING voice, her constant vibrato is too much for my taste, i prefered Rossum's performance in the movie.

Am i alone in thinking this?

I think Rossum is cute and appealing, but her voice was nearly void of emotion most of the time, as remarkable as it was. And I personally did not like the guy they cast as Raoul at all...I think he's talented but he was wrong for the part. Lastly, I'll always be partial to Crawford but I still think Butler was neither here nor there for the phantom.

Overall, I thought the movie was extremely mediocre...it was nice for an audience to see more of the storyline as the stage production can't show everything that was in the book, but I felt that they wasted their opportunity.

After seeing the musical, i hated the movie... it changed so much from the original... I mean, WTH was that sword fighting scene?

Actually from what i've heard, the movie was closer to the book than the musical.
