Finally got around to upgrading speakers... Now need a sub

I posted a while ago asking for help with speakers, and deciding to go with Polk stuff due the price. I have Logitech Z5300's right now that are being used for HT use. I was torn between getting really cheap Polk, or buying 2 bookshelves from something like Focal, B&W, or Paradigm and getting a sub to build upon. I decided it made more sense to buy cheap Polk so it's a straight upgrade from what I have now, and if I went with the Monitor 70's instead (which I wanted) it would have cost more than if I went with entry level Focal, B&W, or Paradigm's.

This is what I got:
2x Monitor 50's
1x CS1 center
1x pair of Monitor 40's

So, I'm looking for a decent sub that ideally I could get off Amazon for ~$150 or so. Any suggestions?

I think it goes a little cheaper from time to time, but I don't know if those prices include free shipping or not.

The Polk PSW505 is on Newegg now for something like $199 with a coupon code... Not sure if you are interested in matching your sub with your towers. I've read good reviews on the sub, so it might be worth it for you.

LOL!

I did a lookup on the PSW505 at Amazon and saw this in a "5 star" review:

b) This sub is one of the few in its price range that actually has an LFE input (Low Frequency Effects) in addition to LL & speaker-level. I you didn't know, LFE & Line-Level (LL) inputs both use an RCA connector. The difference is that the LFE channel carries only low freqs from source whereas LL carries the entire sound spectrum. The LFE goes straight to your sub's amp whereas LL first goes through your sub's built-in crossover and then from there to your sub's amp. If you plug LL into the LFE input, you'll be asking the sub reproduce the full sound spectrum. Not what you want, of course. Probably not a big deal whether you use one or the other. The Polk's built-in crossover is fine, i'm sure, but I'd rather do the crossing-over at the A/V unit level.

So much wrong in so detailed writing.

I've heard that Polk subs aren't that great for the price. Maybe I'm wrong on that though.

No, you heard right. Polk subs are cheap, and they sound muddy. Avoid.

A good choice would have been that Kilpsch that was on Newegg for $180 a couple weeks ago.

wow the bic america f-12 is $185.92 w/free shipping at the moment on amazon

looks like just about the lowest price you can expect

when I ordered my cheap sub I got the Dayton SUB-120 12" 150 watt, its really a nice sub for the price, I think it was $149 shipped on parts express during xmas

for the price diff though I'd get the F12 for $185

Score! Ordered, thanks!

Had $50 balance from selling books back last semester, so $137 shipped for it. All said and done a full 5.1 system for ~$525 shipped. Not too bad for an upgrade over the Z5300's and will (hopefully) work well until I can get into a real system of Focal, Paradigm, B&W, or otherwise.

Great timing!! :awe:

No kidding. I am quite happy about it personally lol. All said and done $500 shipped basically for a 5.1 tower system replacing my old Logitech 5300's which were $300 when I got them ~5 years ago. I'd say it's an amazing upgrade for $200 more than that system 😛

definitely let us know your thoughts once you've set it up and played...

I will do that. I got the Polk speakers already and have the towers setup being broken in (if that really does anything) while we pack shit to move to the new place. Amazon is amazing though with their free shipping I'll have my sub less than a week after I placed the order. It was shipped today and expected delivery tomorrow haha. I'll post pics once I get it all setup after the move.
