Finally going to DC Opty

I'm about to order an Opty to upgrade my 146@2.5 to a 170-180. I've read some comments here & there that they are shipping chips with X-2 memory controllers or adding more cache & calling them Opterons. Is this true? If so what steppings do I need to look out for? Thanks .

it was a rumor that was never confirmed as i remember. Not too sure what steppings to look out for. from what i heard from the rumor there was a very small amount of chips that were dubbed X2 Optys. This was about 1 year ago i think so you will be fine getting your new opty.

well i dont know about that, but i do know that some of the x2's were crappy opteron steppings; i, myself, had an x2 3800 whose stepping was known from less-than-stellarly overclocking opterons. whether it was a rebadged x2 or actually was a rebadged opty i couldn't tell you for sure, but i can confirm that some steppings show up on both.

but i'm pretty sure it was an older one, and considering age, you should keep in mind that they don't even make 939 cpu's anymore, at least as far as i'm aware, so any opteron you'd buy won't be really that recent.

Thanks, I know they've been discontinued. I'm wondering if this came up in the latter shipments or if it was earlier to keep up with demand.

it was a awhile ago when the x2's first came out.

I'd say the new x2 3600+ brisbane is also good for OC tons people got it over 2.8+ and running at low temp too.

yea stock voltage the 3600 can go up to 2.8 easy. in one case it beat a X6800 in a Sandra cpu test.
