Finally Get Broadband today. What else do I need?

I'm finally able to get cable modem access installed today. I'm heading in a bit to pick up the equipment. What are some of the firs things you would recommend that I do.

I am planning on hooking up the modem via a NIC card as oppossed to the USB connection.

How important is a firewall?

Any other suggestions.

Thanks

Being that your always connected,I would recommend getting a simple firewall such as Zone alarm or Sygate in which both are free anyways. I would also head over to DSLReports.com and tweak your system a little, that is if you want to get a little more speed from your broadband connecton.

Good Luck and happy surfing🙂

Check out the tools section and run the speed tests and tweak tests.

Cool. I already have DSLReports bookmarked so I'll be sure to run the tweaks.

I only opted for the 768 download speed for $39.99 a month as oppossed to the 1.5 Mbits speed. Think I'll be wanting to upgrade that soon?

Welcome, my friend, to the Electric Broadband Circus! After exactly 15 minutes of surfing w/broadband, you will uncontrollably shout aloud: "I would slit my wrists if I had to go back to dialup!!" You will repeat this verbal outburst several times, per hour, for the first week you have broadband! 😀

Chipster gave you excellent advice, especially about the Zonealarm part. You need some type of firewall...Zonealarm is nice, but a hardware firewall would be better. Something like a Netgear RT317/SMC Barricade will basically keep you invisible to the outside world, if configured properly, and will enable you to share your connection w/other PCs in your home (if any).

Until you at least get Zonealarm installed and configured properly, I'd recommend not leaving your PC powered up if you're not using it. Too easy for some idiot to come in and delete all your info.

Well it's like anything else, you always want a little more. But in reality, you'll be just fine with the 768 DL speed and paying 39 bucks a month for broadband is actually a pretty good deal considering alot of them are up around $50.

Yup. I pay $50/mo for SWBell DSL. I have 1500 down/128 up. My average DL speed is about 140kb/s, which I'm very happy with. DLing something big, like 3DMark2001SE, which is about 38 meg takes all of a minute with broadband, or all night, about 8 hours with dialup. 😀 Um, which one should I choose? Duh....$50 a month is a small price to pay for such wonderful speed.

SWBell used to offer upgraded or "business class" DSL for home users for $100 a month..I believe it was 3.0mb/s down and 1.5 up...they don't offer it anymore...I'd get it if they did, that's for sure.
