Using WPCREDIT go to row 6, column F and change the value from 0F to 1F.

I watched my temps drop from 43-43.5c to 38-38.5c within 2 minutes using HWD.

I knew someone would finally find the problem ...

(freakn windows)

the info

still dropping ... 37.5c now

system temp slowly dropping now too ... 22c

____ EDIT ___

(works good ... using WPCRSET now)

Any problems with audio? I read somewhere about clicking or some sort of interference when playing music when you use this tweak. *edit*
Or am I thinking of some other software tweak to get temps lower?

You know, there's a reason why STPGNT has been disabled on every chipset since the KT133A. It causes problems without offering any benefit. Who the hell cares what your idle temps are? Do you let your comp just sit at an empty desktop all day? Neither this nor any other register change(REGISTER, not Windows registry...this has nothing to do with your OS) will lower LOAD temps, and those are all that matter. Mobo makers leave the idle cooling disabled for a reason. You should too.

Pilsnerpete :::

I havent noticed anything yet ... only 2 days thou ...

Been playn Q3A and NOLF2 ... and surfing ...

______________________________________________

Well,,, Jaeger66

I think you answered your own post....

My systems are rarely at full load. Even when playing games...

I use Prime95 to make sure my systems are stable and peak temps arent to high ... that's a bout it.

So...

I have 2 computers, 2 monitors, networking gear, lights, 2 windows facing south, and probably some other heat generating stuff in this small room I play in.
(not to mention me sweating a good game of Q3A)

You be suprized how much cooler it is in this room now.

My Xp2600 idled at 43c in my KX7-333, after the tweak ... only 29c (1c over system temp)
(this system runs a game server 24/7 and its never peaked out either,,, even when my total 630 upsteam is used)

My NF7-S is my working/gaming server... I already postd my results there...

Keeping the air cooler in the room, keeps the system temps low in my PC's, thus helping eachother stay cool.

And I dont get hit in the face when I open the door with a heat wave.

IN FACT:

Even my games dont gererate heat as high as was Windows sitting at idle (after the tweak).... so .. you figure that one out.

OMG, a computer sitting there idle........what a shame! I can't have any of my systems running idle, it's just a waste of good valuable CPU cycles.

Jeeze ,,,

Now you make me feel bad too.

Maybe I should keep my obeservations to myself.

(at least my dedicated game server is 24/7)

I posted my find here because I had been looking this NF2 chipset tweak for over 2 months.
It might be old news, I'm sorry.
It might be good news. (like it was for me)

It might be BAD news others who would rather tell me NOT to use this tweak.

I'm going to use this tweak. (unless some ill effects arise)

For those of you who would tell me not to use it ... well... you can put that advice where the sun don't shine.

Your "advice" is not good. It basically amounts to saying "here's a tip that will reduce stability while offering nothing in return!" Does that sound useful? No. The chipset designers know what they are doing. You do not.

wtf ! ... when did I day that ...?

Please explain ... in detail please ...

Because ... I've been using this cooling tweak on 3 different motherboard chipset types for about 5 years ...

(AMD 761, KT333, and now the NF2)
(my KX7-333 still uses it ... about 3 or 4 years now ... not one single issue)
(the AMD 761 (K7master ... is in a box) ... but had no problems using it either)
(I also have all 3 CPU's used in these motherboards... the 1.2 t-bird is back in the KX7-333 now)

Maybe you used it improperly ? and destroyed your windows setup?

Please tell me how it damages hardware please ...
(with examples)

He's saying it reduces stability, which it quite may, but if you've been using it and it works for ya, keep on using it! I was curious if there were any audio defects or anything odd that goes on when you use it.

The KX7-333 is still running 189.9 fsb ... for about 3 or 4 years ...
(yes ,,, thats a 133 rated MB ... not 166 ... according to Abit anyway)

It runs Prime95 WITH 3dMark01 on looped on NON_DEFUALT with sound ON for over 12 hours ... and memtest86 no errors running overnite ... (8hours or more)

Now thats stablity... (for me anyway)

Im going to re-run that same test (again) on my NF7-S over the weekend ... just for giggles now...
( it's running 215.5 fsb right now )

No wierd sounds or anything noticeable yet ... Still playing the above mentioned games and doing my normal surfing ...
3 days now ..

I'd say that's unlikely since the oldest of those chipsets showed up in early 2001. And anyway the issue only appeared once CPU speeds topped 1GHz.

Unless you have a basic understanding of digital logic the why's and how's are more than I feel like going into. The fact that you blamed Windows indicates that I'd be wasting my time. If you're that curious, the AMD Athlon datasheets are available on AMD's site to download. You'll learn more than you ever want to know.

As for the "what happens", to put it as simply as possible fast CPU's will try to exucute new instructions before the CPU can fully wake up. The effect on your system when this happens can manifest itself as all kinds of things, which is why it took a while to pinpoint. I just don't see the point in taking a chance with something so random, especially since idle temps mean about as much to your system as what color your case is.

Actually audio problems were what led to people looking at this. Anything that requires a clean PCI stream might be affected. In fact this is from the vcool site:

"One question remains: Why isn't all this enabled by default?

Well during my testing I found out that disconnecting the system bus might affect real-time applications, i.e. applications that use hardware in a time-critical way. For example I noticed that with the bus disconnect enabled a captured video is full of dropped or garbled lines. So this cooling feature comes at a cost - probably that's why they kept it hidden."

Oh ... I over-estimated my K7master purchase ... sorry ... lol

Your correct ... 2001 !

Like I said ... I been using it so far with no issues ...

Been using Winamp ,,, DivX 2.0 .... media player ... ummm .... can't think of anything else that I use that streams ...

But ... I'm not a big streamer ... I'll look into it though ... OK?

Any application suggestions I should test?

(btw ... is that a stability issue?)

(I have been using that tweak on the KT333 MB since I got it... and it had no sound issues)

I have posted a question at the Nforcers forum regarding this sound / streaming issue...

(on the link on my original post)

they have been using it for a few weeks now....

Just to see if they have noticed anything unusual ...

If they're using the APU for audio it's unlikely that particular issure would appear, the APU isn't on the PCI bus/

I changed this threads title to say NF7-S...

just to make sure I dont get anymore flack ...

... oh ... does that mean you gave me that pissy attitude for a not_well_ thought_ out reply?

Nope. Audio is one of many issues, and people do use PCI cards on nForce boards if they find the APU audio to be inadequate.

No. As I said, this operation potentially causes problems while offering noting of value. You seem to be missing the fundamental issue here, which is that idle temps mean nothing. It is pointless to even care what they are.

I explained why .. in this thread ... on a previous post.... why ... and the results ...

You are the only one in three Abit forums that have an issue.

You dont get it ... I did take a notice to your concerns...

And ...I have posted your concerns at Abit, Nforcer's and here ...

You are the only with an issue.

And not one user has posted verification of your issues.
