Finally found a good keyboard, now if I can just find a mouse...

I'm a bit of an input device junkie. I've got mice and keyboards stacked high in my closet. I've finally found a keyboard that I like and fits my requirements (Typematrix EZ Reach), and now I'm continuing my quest for a mouse.

Right now, I'm using a Logitech 510, but I don't care for it too much. I like the optical engine when the sensitivity is cranked nearly max, but I'm a total fingertip controller, so the full-hand body of the MX510 just doesn't work. After a while, my hand starts to hurt. Plus, I'm not totally fond of the scroll wheel. I've tried the G7 a bit, but it's got the same general shape. Both mice are a bit too heavy for my tastes.

I've tried the Copperhead and the Habu as well. The Copperhead was decent when it came to shape, and fairly lightweight. The two rightside buttons were mostly useless, however, and the laser engine skipped the cursor a lot at my high sensitivities. The Habu wound up being another heavy full-hander as well despite the slightly different shape from the Logitechs.

I've got a handfull of wireless mice that came with random keyboards over the years, and none of those are really useful at all. The mouse that came with the MX3200 keyboard felt good for a full-hand mouse, but the weight was insane and I had problems making the fine movements that I use with high sensitivity.

A lot of the notebook mice look like they'd be pretty good sizes and fingertip control, but nearly all of them are wireless and jack up the weight, not to mention interference and having to deal with a battery. Plus, a lot only have the basic three or four buttons.

So, what I'm looking for is a fingertip controlled mouse that's very lightweight, small, has at least five buttons, and a decent tracking engine that won't skip at high sensitivities (IE > 80% on Windows sensitivity slider). Plus, it has to be wired :p Very easy to click buttons is a plus (the Copperhead's buttons were a pretty good mesh for me; the MX510's are really stiff).

Erm, yea, I'm a *weeeee* bit picky when it comes to input devices :)

I've done some googling and looking around, and about the closest I can stumble across is the Fatality that was released a while ago:

Newegg Clicky

I seem to recall it was a finger tip oriented mouse, but the click problems have me worried.

I've had my eye on the G9 but that looks to still be a bit of a palm mouse, and I can't find any details on the weight. Though, it is still smaller than the G5.

Anyone have any further ideas? Brick and mortar stores around here carry almost ONLY wireless mice. I'm not too concerned over price, either, since I'm trying to find something that won't hurt after long periods of use and will handle well as fingertip-only control at very high sensitivities.

Anywho, nice to know the G9 is now in stock, at least, along with the preorder for the new G15 keyboard (see combo):

Most newer mice are more towards palm movement. The best fingertip mice are from Razer, and the Copperhead is one of the better Razer mice. I'd say try the new 3G Diamondback, or if you can find it, the Boomslang '07 limited edition. That Creative one is a claw type, which is more palm and arm movement than quick fingertip movements.

Aaah, I had thought it was finger; my mistake. If the copperhead didn't skip so horribly compared to the 510, I'd probably just stick with that. I'd move the mouse until movement is registered, but then the cursor would skip over too many pixels. I tried it on a variety of different pads and surfaces, but it just did the same thing. The only solution was to turn down the sensitivity, which then made it slower than the 510. Bit of a catch 22. I did somewhat eye the 3G Deathadder, and the local Best Buy has it in stock, so I could probably give it a spin. I *did* really like the on the fly sensitivity adjustment (vs the DPI adjustment, that is) of the Razer drivers. Though, Solodays didn't seem to care for it.

Guess I'll take a trip and see about blowing some money somewhere. I wish I could find better measurements online of sizes and weights.

Thanks for the suggestion, potato. I might just have to retrain myself to a palm mouse, but I feel so imprecise and sluggish with a palm and arm movement.

Edit: Woops, I need to learn to read. Solodays was talking about the Diamondback and not the Deathadder. I think he was having the same issues I was with the copperhead, if I'm following the description.

Kamikazekyle, try turning down the mouse acceleration in Windows and turning it up in the drivers. At least you don't have to deal with an iffy scroll wheel :p

Thought I tried that a while back, but it's always worth a kick around. I'll see if I can tweak it a bit, or just get used to a palm mouse :) If I consciously try to palm the mouse then I find I don't have quite as many finger and wrist problems, but I wind up having to pick up the mouse and move it more when playing a FPS than just using a fingertip mouse.

Anywho, I'll give it a whirl. Thanks potato. If it still doesn't seem to be working good for me, there's always relearning the mouse. Heck, had to adjust how I type with this new keyboard, so I suppose a mouse would follow ;)

Laser engines just don't perform as well as optical ones. Get the Razer Diamondback 3G. Performs as well as the MX518, has the shape you want.

Another fingertip user here, but luckily I found a way to live with mx518.
While I was doing my search, I had it narrowed down to mx310 and diamondback though.

I've heard reviewers and people say the new logitech G9 is for fingertip users. Have you looked at it? Its not wireless though.

I managed to tweak my Copperhead so it's passable now. I had to use a mix of mouse acceleration and outright sensitivity in order to get it tweaked so it doesn't randomly jump around. It's still not quite as smooth as the opticals in the 510, but it'll do for now. I do want to check out the G9, if not just for a better button layout than the Copperhead. However, I'm going to wait until a B&M store gets some in so I can try it out first hand to see if it really is light enough to be controlled by my fingertips or if it's really another full palmer like the other Logitechs. Hard to tell from reviews, since most of them seem to be palm users instead of fingertips. It's a good thing it is wired as well, since I just can't deal with the weight and slow response of a wireless mouse.
