Finally finished the Silmarillion

Took me the better part of the year, reading it on and off. Kinda dull, too many names (especially different names for the same person/place/whatever) but it was interesting to get more of the LotR backstory. I found the end chapter about the rings of power to be the most entertaining.

I thought about getting the book on CD. Supposedly it's much easier to listen to than it is to read.

Now tell us when you finish "War and Peace". 😀

WaP is much easier to read than the silmarillion.

I mean, there are lotsa characters in WaP, and are called by different names also, but at least the names are recognizable unlike all those elvishen ones.

The only thing harder about WaP is that its longer.

Good for you.

I read it at least 3 times. The whole LOTR at least 7 times and The Hobbit 3 times. Jeez, it all started 32 years ago.

I've got a first edition Simarillion in hard cover.

The Silmarillion is definatly geared towards Tolkien's brainchild, so to speak.
Tolkien is truly a linguist and it is definatly reflected in his book.

I've read it twice, but it's been years since then. I want to get a nice copy of it some time. Good job sticking to it! You definitely get more out of it the second time though 😀

It has taken me a year to make it 3/4 of the way through the book. It is fantastic, but really difficult to read.

I don't believe you. Such a feat is unpossible.

I concur.

I've started it several times and never made much progress. First time I picked it up was well over 10 yrs ago. 😀
Maybe i'll give it another shot in another 10 yrs or so.

I read the Simarillion twice over 25 years ago and it felt like a real accomplishment at the time.

I bought the complete set at Books a Million when the first trilogy came out a couple of years ago. For some reason I just can?t get into it again.

W&P was mandatory reading in HS. I don't remember much about it other than the senseless mass killing and destruction of war.
