I think I solved at least one of the mysterious failures I've had lately. I had a WD80 hard drive that crashed a few times and didn't work and resurrected itself - I RMAed it, got a new one, put it in the same mobile rack I had been using for the previous one, and the new one failed too. Removed the rack and no problem. Strange thing is that other drives (2 maxtors and one WD) work fine in that rack. this is the rack.

I Feel bad for RMAing the old one now, but after having failed it didn't come back to life right away when I tested it outside the rack. It still failed a number of times before coming back, so it wasn't obvious then what caused it.

All very weird, but I'm throwing out the mobile racks.

Congrats on getting the problem fixed. It looks to me like the rack has too little airflow and my guess is that your hard drives overheated. Generally you want to do a lot of research before picking a rack like that to avoid the problems you had.
