Finally decided to update iPhone to 2.2, now it's bricked.

So, yeah...my iPhone is dead, I don't have my laptop anymore which was also authenticated for this phone so am I just SOL? Plugging it in with iTunes running while holding down the button doesn't do anything as the system doesn't recognize the damn thing, meaning that I can't restore it.

Any suggestions? I fucking hate that Apple just won't support x64 XP.

Is there an Apple Store near you? Or an AT&T store?

They may be able to help.

What does 64-bit XP have to do with anything?

Sucks you bricked your phone, but I run 64-bit XP, upgraded to 2.2 and had no issues.

I'd just take the thing to an Apple or AT&T store.

Try holding both the Lock btn and the Home btn for 10 secs (time it), and then let go of the Lock btn while continuing to hold the Home btn for an additional 5 secs... all while being plugged into your computer.

Sounds like instructions on how to get the entrance of the Wizards Guild in a MUD I use to play. ;)

There are no issues with Vista x64, they have native driver support for all Vista platforms. As for dmw16, most people running XP x64 have problems with iTunes as it doesn't natively support our OS. Maybe you're just lucky. Do a quick search for "itunes xp 64-bit" or "iphone xp 64-bit" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

And I know how to hold down the buttons and whatnot, that's not the problem.

I'm currently at work waiting for the work computer to download whatever's needed to restore the phone. I'd like to restore it to 2.1, but I don't seem to have that option. Hopefully it'll still sync okay after I go home for lunch.

Me neither! But still, they refuse to support it. I'm currently backing up from a restore point who-knows-how-long ago. I was just in LA this last weekend seeing my old auto show coworkers, so I've lost all the numbers I picked up. I probably haven't set a backup point in months (the last one was 8/4...).

fack.

Oh man.. this is why I think MobileMe sync should come standard (for free) with the iPhone. It's so nice to have that backup to my computer over the net, without having to sync.

Wait? Did the upgrade to 2.2 hose your iTunes, too?

Mmmm, so far iTunes seems okay. BUT, to give everyone some background, this is what I went through to successfully install iTunes originally. And for some reason, it seems that the same incompatibility issues lead to the bricking of my iPhone every upgrade. I'm just not going to bother any more until I build my new computer in the spring or buy a new laptop.

Maybe I am just being dense, but, shouldn't you have all your info going back just to your last sync? When was the last time you synced? (I assume you did not last sync in August!)

I hope that's how it works...but I haven't synced since probably a week before 2.2 came out, so all the new numbers, texts and pictures that I got over the holidays are now gone. I'm just going to jailbreak it and wait until there's a meaningful update to bother with all this again.

(I feel a new thread-inspired thread with a poll re: syncing coming on...)
