Finally came to terms with 7900GTX memory clocked at 1600MHz...

Remember that Nvidia originally speced the 7800GTX 512 at 1600 and XFX BFG EVGA and a few others ran them at 1700 and higher. My guess is that they will be 1.1ns again. Just like the 650 specced speed I expect the minum of our favorite overclocker manufacturers to run them at 700 with quite a few running them at 750. I just hate the fack that none of the reviewers do retail vs. retail, they wait a month or two just to th retail cards.

Something tells me it might be difficult to get a lot of retail cards from different manufacturers all right at launch.

What is wrong with this? What matter is performance, I don't think the 7900 GTX will be slower with a 650MHZ Core Speed which has a larger impact then the 1.6GHZ memory..., due to it being on the 90nm low-k and at a project MSRP 499US the 650MHZ Core should be a reasonably easy bin speed, so there is room for OC edition which should breach even the highest editions of the 7800 GTX 512, to my knowledge the highest I have seen the memory clocked at is 1.73GHZ

Some crazy Finnish people got a 7800 (I forget which model, I think it was the 512 GTX) to 2048mhz on the mem.

They were cooling with liquid nitrogen though...

The difference between officially clocked 1700mhz ram on 512mb 7800GTX and 1600mhz 7900GTX is about 6%, which will never be noticed in the real world. I don't think it matters if a card can debut at $300 lower retail price than what you can get the ghost edition at today.

1600mhz effective=800mhz=1.25 ns. memory.

Samsung offers GDDR3 1.25 ns so it will probably be 1.25 :(
Infineon also does
Hynix also does

Well yes I was refering to Factory Overclocked Editions, utilizing air cooling. Not exotic cooling solutions.

Wrong. The Nvidia specification was 1700MHz (not 1600MHz) :D. MOST vendor's did take them even higher though...

Reference - 550/1700
XFX - 580/1730
BFG - 580/1750
Gainward - 580/1760

There were even eVGA and Gainward factory water-cooled cards clocked at 600/1800 :)

coldpower27, there were a couple factory overclocked cards (on air) with memory clocked above 1730... as stated above.

RussianSensation, Nvidia NEEDED the faster memory on the GTX-512 to compete with ATI in high resolution/high AA/AF situations, as ATI's current AA/AF is toping Nvidia's. And you may be correct in saying there is a small difference between 1600MHz-1700MHz, however, a difference between 1.2ns and 1.1ns chips is a greater (especially when extreme overclocking and volt-modding are used).

xtknight, Samsung produces 1.1ns memory also.

Allright my bad, I didn't really remember what the highest memory overclock of the 7800 GTX 512, as finding the stock versions were already hard enough, even still the 650MHZ Core will speed advanatge these cards provide regardless. 1760 is a little bit higher but still beatable if the partners have boards that have 1.1ns Samsung place on them.

IMHO, just because Nvidia reference speced it for 1600MHZ doesn't necessarily mean they can't use 1.1ns chips, ATI uses 1.1ns chips even though they only 1.2ns for the X1900 Series, due to their lower clock rates.

mmm...yeah, I know. I doubt the 7900GTX will overclock very much, so that's why I think they will just put 1.25 ns to save money. The GPU itself will be very expensive.

It's going to have the same 1.1ns memory as the 7800GTX 512. What they are most likely doing is using tighter timings with the memory so they can't clock it quite as high.(Just like DDR memory- you can have tight timings and lower speed or looser timings and higher speed). The change to tighter timings will most likely improve performance more than the extra speed. So its a good thing!!
