I've finally decided on getting a new watch, a citizen ecodrive to be exact. I've got it narrowed down to two models:

Titanium Skyhawk $300
http://www.ashford.com/product/index.asp?sn=98277552&md_id=2&pf_id=7588&dept_id=106&series=Eco-Drive

Titanium Modena $314
http://www.ashford.com/product/index.asp?sn=98277552&md_id=2&pf_id=10061&dept_id=106&series=Eco-Drive

I could get the Stainless steel version of each for around $200, but wanted Titanium for overall versatility over time.

The reason I picked these two models was... they are titanium, has an alarm, stopwatch, ecodrive (no batteries ever), perpectual calendar (never have to set the calendar again), and they are both Citizen quality.

Which would you guys get?

THanks
Joe

btw: Ashford is damn cheap when it comes to these watches.... almost as cheap as ebay. :)

I think both of those watches are overcrowded, y'know?

But I had a plain timex dial-only watch until the band broke, at witch point my mother gave me a swiss army watch that she had had for some time (really nice, just a plain face with a date box where the '3' would be, leather band, really good glow-in the dark stuff, none of this new-fangled 'indiglo,' i'm pretty sure it has a titanium body (has the dull brushed look, but i suppose it could be steel. and it keeps really good time (although buying from citizen, those watches should too.)

anyway, if I was you I would go with something simpler. But thats just me.

Both are too cluttered for me, but I'd pick the modena because I just want a watch, not a ton of other functions.

Unless you really need everything from the Skyhawk, I'd also go with the Modena, for simplicity's sake. My watch has just the 12, 3, 6 and 9 ticks, and after this one, I'll probably get a Rado or Movado.

the skyhawks are monstrously popular. we haven't been able to sell that titanium modena because citizen has stopped production on it, so good luck on getting it.

both watches are beautiful, the skyhawk does have a "lot" going on with all the world times and what not, but remember it is also a pilots watch. the modena is a great everyday watch.

damn I hate cluttered watches... my Seiko just displays the time and date in a sophisticated fashion and that's all I care for. That being said, I'd choose the Modena for the less cluttered look

Agreed with alot of other people.

The Skyhawk looks "busy" and overcluttered.

Modena is a nicer looking watch IMO.

whats the point? I have a TAG and an ESQ. I wear the ESQ much more often because I'm afraid to scratch my TAG (Link automatic). I think I should have gotten an Omega Seamaster, I would think it makes a much better everyday watch

Personally I would go with the Stainless models, TI is nice if you have allergic reactions to nickle or if you really must have the weight savings that it allows for, but it shows scratches very easily, and I have heard that the parts will or can fuse together over time which could be a pain...plus there is a pretty substantial price savings for the SS which IMHO looks better.

In response to the Tag, Breitling, Omega comments, while everything is subjective...I feel Breitling offers some of the best pieces with a competitive price out there and some good service to boot (they had a bad period in the early 90s that they suffered from and now are trying to correct that image), Tag makes nice unique watches that have a high status value to them, their service is good and their parent company recently aquired a very high end brand (zenith) that supplies chrono movements to them....Omega is owned by Swatch co, they make very nice watches but their aftersales service in the US sucks, it is so bad rumor has it they are killing their only US service center and will start making their customers send their watches to Switzerland for service (good because their Switzerland service is top notch, bad because turnaround and the shipping costs will more than double)...while the SMP is a nice looking watch, I personally wouldn't trust it nearly as much as a Breitling or a Tudor for real diving (it makes a better movie prop than a tool IMHO). Also Omega is trying very hard to compete with Rolex and because of this many of their models are going way up in price with little real world end user noticable improvement over their older models....Rado is also a division of Swatch...Movado makes some really nice pieces that if you look hard enough you can get a good deal....

for good brands that offer nice watches check out ESQ, Oris, or Seiko...Citizen is also nice but personally I would save my money and just get a Seiko Auto diver for about a little over $200, great watch with a proven movement and very durable....

Also noticed that you were considering ashford...don't know if you knew but they went under about a year ago and now are owned by a different company that I personally wouldn't trust..they openly admit they remove serial numbers from some of their higher end pieces and in many states that is against the law....I try not to do business with companies like that...

if you have any other ??s feel free to ask, watches are my other hobby.

eco-drive perpetual calendar

i just bought my bf this one (i work with citizens, got it cheap)

this is an awesome little watch. it is amazingly light for stainless steel. he was trying to get the modena at first but because citizen discontinued it i couldn't get it. alarm, chronograph, thin case, slick, light. i think its a great watch.

as for someone saying tag is great, gag. breitlings are awesome with also a lot going on, but hey they're pilot watches. omega seamasters are beautiful.. i love looking at them.

Sorry forgot to post which of the two I would go for but figure I would comment on this as well...with regards to the two pieces you pictured I personally would go with the Skyhawk even though it has a cluttered dial, just like the look of it more than the Modena.

what your talking about is highly subjective, Tag is very very popular and getting moreso by the minute so what you think is *gag* many people consider good, personally I am glad that not everyone has the same taste as I do as it keeps individuality and choices available to everyone...with re the Omega seamasters there are currently two very distinct model styles available, the "Bond" style which is shown in the movies and then there is a new model which has a retro SM300 look...the "Bond" model is being slowly phased out and replaced with the newer retro more Rolex looking style. Personally I think they look ok, but a little too feminine for me, or at least the older Bond model with the intriquite bracelet looks too much like jewelery, the new model is much more masculine.
