Bought a refurbed Acer A1-810. It was only about a hundred bucks. Didn't really know if I'd get any use out of a tablet but didn't want to buy an el cheapo no-name that would make a bad first impression.

Anyway, this thing is cool and works great. Got the Amazon store as well as the Google store plus a bunch of other apps. It's very responsive and plays movies perfectly. It also has Net Flix and Hulu but I haven't tried them. For now, it's made an excellent first impression and I'll be dropping a few more clams on the next one.

Now I can surf and post in bed. :D

I remember the times when a cheap tablet would mean a years worth of therapy and anti-anxiety pills.

A friend of mine tells the story of a friend of his who gave a 70USD tablet to his younger brother just to see him pissed off cause it was so unusable. I don't know if the story is 100% true, but it doesn't surprise me.

Nowadays though, 100 bucks will get you a pretty decent tablet, from what I've seen, and I'm not surprised you're happy with your purchase. I myself am about to receive my first tablet, a Nexus 7, 2013 edition, which I plan to use mainly for reading and light browsing and gaming when I'm on the move. Basically all my phone does plus the reading bit, only better and more affordable.

Certainly could be true. You can still find plenty of cheap tablets that are the gift equivalent of setting a bag of poo on fire on someones doorstep.

On the other hand, it is amazing how good a tablet you can get fairly cheap these days.

I went with a cheap Asus memo hd 7 tab a few months ago. Then I bought a Samsung galaxy tab pro 8.4, the memo is now collecting dust.

You can usually find a used Nexus 7 (2012) for under $100, which is usually a much better option than any new tablet in that same price range.

Stock Android from Google makes all the difference.

Well Acer has done an excellent job solidifying their position as worst of the name brand tablet manufactures. :)

I would have gone with a Nook HD or HD+.

tired of the ads, popups, and spam that comes with unrooted devices, I went back to my desktop and relegated the tablet for emergency use in hotels only.

What I yearn is to have full fledged windows install in a phone format. Having it in a tablet, such as the Dell Venue Pro, would also be nice but I can't justify spending the money when I have the Venue 7 already.

I'm a tablet on and off guy. Most of the time I buy and play with them for a while then sell them when I'm bored.

Currently own the ATT LTE version of the Galaxy Note 8. Not the latest and greatest for sure but I've had it almost a year already which is a tablet record for me....Guess it helps that I got it for $75 after a couple of promotions last year.

I also have a Nook HD+ but the Acer is better. It's faster and not as restrictive or hard to figure out. The nook can be laggy when zooming in and out in a Mag, not so the Acer. I know the Nook is supposed to have a better screen but the difference is minimal.

I'm surprised by your comparison. The Nook HD+ has the faster processor, does include Google Play now... And no way could I imagine the display difference to be minimal when comparing a 164 DPI 1024x768 7.9 inch screen to a 254 DPI 1920x1200 FHD 8.9 inch IPS display. Acer typically cuts severe corners on display quality on cheap tablets (I wouldn't be surprised if it's a TN panel).

But if the Acer is working better, then that is what matters. :)
