A public service announcement:

Did you ever wish there was a film version of "The Hobbit" that did not deviate from the original book and did not introduce Legolas, Galadriel or Sauron (!) before the events of "The Lord of the Rings"?

Well... there is such a film.
Though the magic of fanediting (by a pro, no less!), Peter Jackson's over-indulgent three films are reduced to a single 4-hour epic.

Oh, and did I mention the resulting motion picture actually follows the book? With none of the added cuteness, silliness, inter-species romance or extraneous filler, like poor Radagast? (Yes, I did, but it's worth repeating

)

So, here's the film as it should have been in the first place: You can download it as a torrent, in either Blu-ray or DVD format, as well as a standalone HD video file. Impeccable audio-video quality, multi-channel sound and subtitles, even comes with printable case cover labels.

Oh, and if you're a die-hard fan of the films, check out the other fanedit, "Durin's Folk", too... it puts together some of the excised scenes to tell the story of the dwarves.

I tried watching a fan-edit of the prequel Star Wars trilogy recently (it had two names, one was 'return to the dark side' iirc), it had some of the shittiest editing I've ever seen, though I did find it vaguely amusing that it left all but something like 4 minutes of 'phantom menace' on the editing room floor :)

66GB for the BR version!

There have been probably 20+ different fan edits of the series released over the last 3+ years. I watched one of the more respected versions that came out in 2015 and cut the trilogy down to a little over three hours and it still felt overlong and bloated.

The White Council driving Sauron from Dol Goldur (one of the coolest parts of the movies), occurs during events in the Hobbit. I think it's completely appropriate to have in the movies and in fact most of the fans were looking forward to seeing it depicted.

There are plenty of valid criticisms of the movies, but that isn't one of them.

Ralph Bakshi already made the best Hobbit film back in the 70s. It was damn good.

Since the source of your information is the Appendix part of LOTR, yoiu're actually supporting my viewpoint. We're dealing with one of the first instances of retconning, half a century before Lucas. But the fact remains the original Hobbit was written without this information. The Hobbit has to be the reader/viewer's gate into LOTR, not vice-versa. As such, it cannot require prior knowledge of LOTR lore, details or add-ons. QED.

Was waiting for this. There was some cool music video thing that actually made me almost want to watch the 2nd and 3rd movies, but I don't think I could (I used to be big LotR fan too, and watched that 70s animated Hobbit movie so much growing up).

Here's that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY0lLcz3Qis

That opening bit with the "Over the Misty Mountains" song was awesome but then just felt mostly letdown from there. And there was potential, there were at least some cool bits, but just didn't enjoy the first movie so never cared to see the next two.
