commercial servers like Giganews already offer that access and way way way much more for a fraction of the price...but u gotta have some savvy to use them, and understandably most people want something more convenient to use, so i think this movie downloading service is a good step by the studios who are slowly getting with the online 21st century

What if there was a service similar to this that had most major and minor studios (including foriegn content), was cheaper, and was backed by a great company you already trust?

$40? And these Einsteins wonder why piracy continues. They simply don't get it. They overvalue their product and then scratch their heads when people find cheaper abeit illegal methods to obtain them.

I find it commical that companies "claim" to be doing this sort of thing to combat piracy, when in reality its going to do nothing to deter people. I would pay the normal DVD price to download a DVD, and nothing more - I mean why would I rather then going and buying it myself?

They make the whole "Well you can burn it or copy it" argument, but I can do those things with the DVD too. Sure some people may do it, but this will do nothing to deter pirates.

Well, of course, that's illegal and this wouldn't be :p

$40 is lame.

wow, way to take possibly a great idea and throw it on the ground, stomp on it, pull out a knife and cut it up, then throw thermite on it and burning it into oblivion.

they should be charging the same or less, because they don't have the costs of the dvd, the packing material, the people that pack and ship it or the shipping itself. this idea is so dumb it hurts. whoever approved of putting it into action should be stabbed in the jaw.

Yeah, and THEN rip it and copy it and use it as many times you want freely.

Yeah but that's not my point. My point is that the advantages of getting dvds from the news servers, as well as all the other copywritten stuff out there currently outweigh those of the legit service that the studios are offering or going to offer.

For example as far as getting the movie on release day, well that's nothing big, as pirated dvd-r copies of the retail dvd are typically released to topsites way before they hit the shelves. Plus we can infer from the article that the format you'll be downloading with this new service isn't going to be dvd-r quality, as most people on average broadband just can't download 4+GB in 40-60min (I'm on 8Mbit and it takes me an hour to pull off Giganews). It'll most likely be xvid quality, which is still pretty good though. One advantage however of the studio service is that you can get the dvd mailed to you.

Price and download diversity are the other major advantages of news servers. Download speed is no advantage however, as they're both commercial and designed to accomodate insane user bandwidth.

The only major disadvantages are the copywrite issues and the learning curve/time/convenience factors of pirating.
