Finally, a good solution to add IR support to the PS3.

Until this mod, you'd have to buy a separate IR remote for the PS3 and have a goofy USB dongle sticking out of your PS3. This really detracted from the overall elegant look of the PS3, and on top of that, the USB ports only supports limited commands. Enter the PS3 remote mod. This mod not only gives the PS3 a cleaner look, you now have FULL support of all the PS3 commands. Anything the standard PS3 remote can do, you can now integrate it into a universal remote.

Good stuff!

They recommend an external power supply...for a remote? And you *STILL* need the blu ray remote that can't control other devices?

I fail to understand how this is even remotely more practical, useful, or esthetically pleasing than having a small dongle hanging off the front of a PS3 or simply just using the Blu-Ray remote as a second remote.

The PS3 Blu-Ray remote in essence becomes the transceiver, an interpreter for the IR remote if you will. You can hide the remote (and power supply) wherever you'd like, as long as there is a line of sight to the IR remote. All this does is give you the ability to FULLY integrate the PS3 control into a universal remote and keep the clean look of the PS3. With the other IR hack (Blu Wave Remote), you can't turn on the PS3 from the remote. The old IR hack is also a crippled PS3 remote as it is using the USB port. Again, this new mod gives full functionality to a universal IR remote.

Looks like a great idea.

My only question is, why don't stb's/receivers/remotes use bluetooth?

I bought one of these to use with my Harmony remote. Works wonderfully, and it looks like it's part of the PS3.

Hey, I agree. It a better solution as it provides two-way communication, and it would also help avoid a fiasco like they had at CES with an IR blaster.

Unfortunately, since you are using the USB port, you don't have all the commands available to you as you would with the original bluetooth PS3 remote. One big one is, the ability to remotely turn on your PS3.

That's true, but I have to walk over to the PS3 to put in a movie anyway (which turns on the PS3), so it's not a big deal to me.

OMG you have to walk...I have my robotic maid do it, it cleans my house, wipes my ass, and even gives me a massage.

Of course, this is the first thing I say to people when they say "I can't turn it on" well duh...when you walk over to put in a disk what happens. The world has just gotten so lazy thanks to technology.

I'm sure many others don't have to deal with this, but my apartment is so ridiculously dry that I've grown to fully expect an electrostatic shock 100% of the time whenever I get off the couch. The first week I moved in, I killed my original Xbox with a shock. R.I.P. XBMC.

So whenever I *have* to touch my 360 or Wii (plugging in Rock Band or P&C unit), I always get to walk over and shock myself on metal before I touch the console. So everyone can talk about how lazy I am, but the fewer times I have to physically touch my AV equipment, the better the solution. So JackBurton's solution will be the first I turn to when I get my PS3 in a year or two.
