FINALLY a 9800 review

Good to finally see a review of it. Pretty close competition between those two. If you can get that 9800 up to pro speeds it's a hell of a good deal. And even if you can't it's still a good deal.

They're just underclocking a 9800P, so this is just like their previous 9800 numbers, but with more games. 🙂

i hope you got sapphire
Nope, I got a bad taste in my mouth with their 7500 and 8500 fiascos. If I get an ATI card I get either genuine ATI or I might settle for a Tyan. That'd be it for me. I'll be sure to post about my particular 9800 and how it does in my system.

Edit: I guess fiasco is a bit strong, but lets say I was let down a bit by their 7500 and 8500 cards. Maybe they turned things around with their R3xx cards but I'm not willing to gamble with my money. Going ATI at all was a big enough gamble for me. :Q

It's getting harder to find the 9700 Pro's so a 9800 for that price range would be a good next step up card from say peeps with the GF4 cards or lower.

I just received my Sapphire 9800 OEM card from GameVE for $244 shipped. I'm still waiting on my case and HD, so I can't install and try it out, but does anyone have a link to specifics on the various types of memory? I want to figure out what speed my memory is.

Got my 9800np Sapphire from Newegg for 265. 2 days later it dropped to 259. Oh well. Mine came with Infineon 3.0 ns mem. I am at 310 right now and still trying it out with the 3.6's. No artifacts yet just some other issues that may or may not be OCing related. Have not touched the core yet. Scored just over 5000 on 3dmark03 and 15700 on 01. The interesting bench was running 3dmark01 with 4xAA and 8xAF. 12000 marks. My 4200 oc'ed only got 3800. Much improvement. All this on a 2100 tbred at 12*185 on 8rda+. Love the card. Most I've ever paid for a video card though.

If you go to Samsung's site, and browse around to find their section on memory, you can enter the model number from your memory and see the specs on it.

9700 pro beats it out

Um, "9700 pro beats it out" makes it sound like the 9700 Pro is better hands down when in truth the 9800 is almost always within 1fps, which means they are identical inperformance and the 9700 pro does not beat it out. In fact the only time the 9700 Pro seems to pull away is Q3 but even there the difference is a mere 5fps and with frames that high you aren't going to tell a difference. Bar charts can be misleaded don't just look at the positions of the cards and come to a conclusion, the only thing this review proves is that the 9800 = 9700 Pro which makes sense as that seems like what ATI would want with phasing out their 9700's.

Oh and let's not forget the 9800 is produced on a more mature and efficient process and therefore has more potential to be tweeked moreso than the 9700 Pro, and with identical performances there really is no reason to go with a 9700 Pro over a 9800 unless there is a large price difference.

Tests

If the 9800 NP is on par with the 9700 Pro. I would expect it to compete pretty nice with the 5900. 5900 Ultra is too much for it.

I have heard that you can flash the 9800 np to the 9800pro bios which gives it more voltage so that you can go to stock 9800pro easier (380/340).

Anyone tried this with their 9800 np card? Is it the Sapphire card only that you can do this on?
