CPU: Up in the air this is where I need the most help


This computre is mostly for Gaming thats why a huge HDD isn't need but I like to have the 7200 RPM and I know most of you will say that the case is too expensive but I plan to LAN with it so the looks are a plus

Any othe suggestion especially with the CPU. Right now the total is ~$725 I'm looking to spend around $1000 but if anyone could tell me where I could save a little money and not sacrifice performance that would be really helpful.

There's a lot wrong with that, actually, not the least of which is the case. You're spending $170 on a component which adds no performance gain at all, when you could get by with $30. Anyway, it looks awful to me. Get a different case. Please.

In the mean time, you have a crappy motherboard picked out. Try this one, instead--it's a great overclocker. It's a bit more expensive, but you can make room in your budget by nixing that awful case.

Instead of spending $127+ on CAS-2 memory, just spend $82 and undertime it.

Those are the main problems. But in addition to that, I'd recommend the NEC ND-3540A for a DVD burner (it's better AND cheaper), and also the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA hard disk (again, better AND cheaper).
 
I heard that undertiming your RAM isn't good is that right? LOL why does everyone hate on the case i think its cool but I may look into getting a cheaper one i think thats ones cool though
 
well the Athlon 64 4000+ san diego, is the exact same as athlon fx 55, the only difference between the 2 is that with the athlonfx you can change the multiplier and the 4000 is locked, this is the way i went and it can save you some cash. but from the tests i saw between the two they both overclocked very similar despite the locked multiplier.

outside of that i believe your next bet would be the FX 57, but its not really a huge difference from 55 but i havnt looked at any tests other than a benchmark score with was 200 points higher and for that particular mark 200 wasnt very much more

i just orderd that exact same mobo 🙂

Undertiming your memory is just like overclocking your CPU: as long as the hardware runs stable, it's great. As you can see, I've undertimed my own memory, and it runs perfectly.

I personally don't like the looks of the case, but that doesn't matter much. What *does* matter is that it costs $170. That's insane! You shouldn't be spending more than $70 or $80 at most, and $30 or $35 would be best.
 
the seagate looks like a good idea no issues that is OEM? That case comes with a PSU as well does that help my case "pun intended" at all?

This is your standard case with a 500W PSU. As you can see, it costs just under $30 shipped. That means you're spending $140 so your PC can look nicer. That same $140 can go towards an extra gig of RAM, or make the difference between single-core and dual-core. Or it can go to something completely unrelated, like new tires or a date with your gal.

And OEM makes no difference at all when it comes to hard disks.
 
Cool thanks for the help any suggestion on a nice looking case w/ PSU thats more reasonable I'm thinking I might just put it towards the monitor


I have been looking into it myself but I cant seem to find any I think that look nice 🙁
 
How bout this case it looks similar which I like an is alot cheaper but now how do I go about figuring out what kinda PSU I need?

Did you select a different case? I didn't see a link.

Picking a power supply usually comes down to personal taste. My socket-754 setup, overclocked to 2.4 GHz, ran just fine on a generic 200W (12A on the +12v rail) PSU. I didn't feel comfortable with just 200W, though, so I upgraded--but that was my problem, not the system's.

Anandtech users seem to agree that Seasonic is the "best" PSU manufacturer. Antec and Fortron Source (FPS) are similarly revered. However, there seems to be no factual basis for these opinions: no failure rates, no damage rates, no stability data--nothing. On the other hand, anecdotal evidence is of some use, if only when no better stats are available. My suggestion, therefore, would be to go with a bundled PSU, or else the cheapest FPS you can find.

if you like the case, go ahead and buy it, its your computer and money. $47 isn't so bad for a case that you like. Now just spend that extra money you saved for a good power supply.
