Final shingle on a roof

I am finishing shingling a roof, and I am ready to do the last row, but I don't know how to finish the last shingle without showing the nail heads. Anyone know?

er, umm... isn't there a final shingle in each row?

How did you do the "top" shingle in the previous rows? 😛

Sorry, I meant the row that goes over the peak of the house.

A. roofing cement it in place
B. The nails show, cover the nails with roofing cement anyway

I'd go with B.

Just leave them showing, it it bothers you cover them with a little tar, they won't leak if nailed properly.

Once you get to the top cut the shingles and put them widthwise bent over the top. Hard to explain... You keep doing the overlapping though.

Chose option A, it worked pretty good, thanks for the suggestions everybody.

If you are using standard 3 in 1 type shingles, cut them into 3 peices at the weather vanes, then fold them over joining both sides of the roof. If they are Architectural, then buy either 3 in 1 for the hips or buy the prefabricated hips. Hips

Now if are talking about putting a row up against flashing, the last row will have nail heads exposed, just put a dab of tar on them.

I thought most peaks had roof vents. No?

I assume you mean ridge vents? I really like them but they are still not the most common venting approach. And you still shingle over them so you have the same result of the last shingle usually having exposed nails. Which doesn't cause a problem.

That's what I meant! (the first part)

Who's going to see nails on the peak of the house?

🙂
