Is this card for business or gaming?

If business go for a Matrox G400 SDR for outstanding 2D image quality. (~$80)

If it's for gaming I would wait just a little and get a Geforce2 MX based card. (~$120)

It's probably gonna be used for a LITTLE gaming but I doubt there will be much. It's just gonna be a computer for my personal uses.

I personally would go for a Duron based system, and an IBM Deskstar 75GXP harddrive, but those are my preferences. ;)

...Hubbard - whilst you will probably be able to run the Pentium 733 on that BX motherboard, it's not 100% sure to work as you will be running your AGP card out of spec (I'm presuming you'll get an AGP card). The AGP is designed to run at 66mhz, but with that board it'd be forced to run at 89mhz (2/3 133=89).

The P3 733 runs on a 133mhz FSB, but the BX motherboard is only designed for 100mhz, as it only has a 2/3 AGP divider. If you want a BX motherboard, and there's no reason why you shouldn't, make sure you get a Pentium 3 E (not EB). The 700 or 750 would make excellent choices.

Bascially, do not get the CUBX AND 733eb - it's not the right combination for you...go for the 700e ;)

As for graphics cards, the Matrox ones are nice, but not the best for gaming - if you're trying to cut costs, I'd recommend a nice little V3 2000, or TNT2. However, if your budget can stretch a little further, an SDR or even DDR Geforce would last you longer and give you better frame rates.

Finally, the IBM 7200rpm hard drives tend to be a little faster, and work better when overclocking. (the Maxtor drives have a reputation of failing at high PCI bus speeds). Though you might not want to overclock now, they'll come a time when the need for (more) speed will be too much to resist, and the combination of an ASUS motherboard and a Pentium 3e chip is an excellent one for a little 'speed boostage' ;)

good luck

ditto what snow said about the 733 on a bx. I'm building a simillar system using the P3V4X. The 733 is actually cheaper than the 700. You can also get a slot 1 processor to avoid messing around with a slotket.

ditto what snow said again. The slot 1 would be for the p3v4x, not the cubx.

you can always get a celeron2 :p

i don't know what the news is on the duron boards, but if you get tired of waiting, get whatever you want. those benchmarks mean nothing anyway. I mean things are plenty fast. but we all want as much power as we can afford.

why are you going after a maxtor HDD? oh well, whatever. i have never dealt with maxtor drives.

the Matrox card is a good idea. or you can pick up an older geforce card :p

get the p3, hubbs... it's the best there is (just not the best deal).

It's starting to sound like paulson is getting a little jealous of hubbs. Anyone with a 1GHz compaq has no grounds for telling someone else to "save money" by building a t-bird/celeron system. Hubbs is going to have the baddest toy on the block, and someone doesn't sound too happy about it! ;)

Paulson,

I've got an extra 733e slot one sitting in a box at home... you want it? Free?
