Nothing particularly novel here, but cops don't have a motive still. It seems pretty clear to me that his mother is in great part to blame for this situation. She didn't kill anybody, but he lived with her as a total misfit, nuttier than hell and playing video games all day while obsessed obviously with firearms as well.

I am guessing she just got tired of it and was used to ignoring the problem after years of dealing with this terrible son of hers; probably grew numb to how thoroughly abnormal he really was.

I think you may be on right on point with your assessment. The changes were most likely suttle enough that his mother didn't realize how obsessed with FPS games he had become and could potentially live out the game against people/place he deemed to be the enemy.

I agree that his mom should have done SOMETHING to help the problem. It was obvious that he was mentally ill and there were tons of red flags out there that he would snap, but I guess she ignored them all. Very sad.

Yep, I can see where being a parent of an social outcast has its own unique pitfalls. On the one hand, there's this immutable bond between parent and child that will forgive and keep forgiving. On the other, there's this unspoken obligation to society that parenthood carries of which we raise our children to be productive members of said society and add to the collective benefit of such.

Add to this, I think it's very difficult to admit failure on the part of a parent that starts out wishing only the very best for their progeny no matter the obstacles, along with dealing with the associated problems their failure and the resultant failing children bring.

Yet again we have a shooter who displays patently obvious signs of severe mental illness and nothing was done. His mother enabled his disease and even purchased him large amounts of firearms? Certainly it's difficult to have someone committed without clear evidence that he/she is an active danger to him/herself or others.. but something should have been done with these clear warning signs. This tragedy seems like it was quite preventable.

Nothing wrong with forgiving a child or continuing to forgive in light of his mental issues, nothing wrong with not admitting failure and all... but hell you don't buy someone like that a gun and you don't keep an arsenal like that in your home when you have someone in that condition. And you sure as hell keep better tabs on what is going on with their lives. Parental love aside... you still are responsible for your offspring no matter what.

As TheVrolok said... this was 100% preventable (and not in a federal gun control sense).
