Final* OC of my X2 4400+

I have been experimenting using baby steps to see how this will clock up to 2640. It seems fine. I am at 52c with 2 - Prime95s trying to stress the hell out of both cores. I am running my XP-120 and Panaflo M1A (I hate there's no rpm monitoring for this fan!).

BTW - the retail HSF is excellent. It was about 2c-3c higher than my XP-120.

I am posting a pic of the latest test. Check it out and see what I am doing right and wrong and please let me know. This isn't a gaming system - other than Flight Simulator. I primarily will use it for development and testing. It will also have sql server 2000 developer running as needed.

What is your RAM? Is it rated for 240 FSB? If not, than a divider may get you a higher OC, but besides that, it looks like a good stable OC.

What should I expect to change? You are aware the vcoew setting in bios isn't accurately reported by the programs (CPU-Z / AIBooster/Probe)?

I'll see what happen with 1.50v.

I just changed it from 1.475v to 1.50v in the bios. It now fluctuates in CPU-Z from 1.488v to 1.520v (similar range in AIBooster). Temp is now stable at 54c (2 - prime95s giving it hell)

Idle was 34c.

If it was doing ok in Prime95 with vcore at 1.475v (bios), what would be the reason for upping the vcore to 1.50v?

Thanks,

i was wondering if you would be able to increase the cpu speed with the higher vcore.

ASUS boards have vCore drooping issues. There are several hard mods you can do to fix this.

My A8N-E has similiar issues. Even with 1.550 in the BIOS it only reliably feeds 1.475 with the occasional 'blip' to 1.52 or so.

I could have had a prime shot this morning after 15 hours. That would have been 2572MHz, 2,2,5, 333MHz ram and 1.475v vcore (bios). Ram was at 186.8.
I'll have one in the morning or later tonight.

I haven't tried to go higher than 2640. What is still relatively "safe"? 1.6v vcore?

RoosterKooster,

I WOULD NOT EXCEED 1.55v on that precious 4400+

Yes, increasing the v-core should theoretically allow you to increase clock speed. if you find that you are continually having to raise your vcore for higher clocks, you're approaching your limit and should ease off a little for stability over the long run.

Pfft...I wouldn't go past 1.55 on a single-core Venice. 1.45 is the upper limit for X2's.

um...thats barely above stock. a motherboard might overvolt more than that. sometimes the optimal defaults which newbies set are higher than that. i think you're trippin. as long as temps are good and you're stable, you should be fine. say it cuts down the life of the cpu from 20 years to 10 years...big deal right?

edit: do you even have an X2???

Given the a8n sli premium's vcore woes, do we really know what the vcore is really being supplied? Mine is currently set at 1.485v in the bios. CPU temp is at 52c with 2 - Prime95s running for almost 3 hours. I'll back it down to 1.45 or 1.6x tomorrow and see if it is stable.

I have had mine at 1.475 for months now, but I don't want to go higher....

No offense meant, but overclocking a development/testing machine seems to be an odd decision. The idea of spending an inordinate amount of time trying to track down a 'coding' error which is actually caused by the overclock just makes me cringe ;p
