I recently got FF XI, and Im enjoying lots right now. I was orginally playing it with a Radeon 8500 64MB, and got a Low Res score of 3515 on the benchmark. Since DirectX 9 games are suppose to be out next year, I figured that I could upgrade my video card to get ready for them. I chose to go with the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, and I have to say that this card rocks. Now the point of this post is though, that when I installed the new video card, I reran the FF XI benchmark to see if there was any improvement. My new score in Low Res was 3628, which is only an increase of 12x points. Then I ran the benchmark on High Res and got a score of 3536. Can someone explain whats the difference and how much impact the rest of my Rig would have on improving performance in game.

CPU 1800XP
MB Soyo Dragon + KT266A
Mem Corsair PC2700 2 x 256mb

old vid card BBA Radeon 8500 64mb
new vid card BBA Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb

Thank you for your time and patience.

While I've got no direct experience with the FFXI benchmark, I'd venture a guess that your old video card was sufficient for their 'low res' settings. I wouldn't worry much unless you put your old card back in, run the 'high res' settings on it, and don't see the 9800 tromp it.

welcome to AT!

I've run the bench too, but keep in mind it's just a bench mark (meaning not = to real life performance(althought close)
also notice that the score you got is certainly high enough to play the game on high res.

i havea 9700NP and got something closre to 4000, but also have lots of RAM, high speed HD's (RAID0)

since you only had a slight difference in your score it means that the old card was sufficient to run the game, and some other hardware was probly the bottleneck. (probly RAM or CPU)

either way, you can still play the game fine :)

BTW you can find me on the Ragnorok Server (straightpipe) 23WAR11MNK11WHM :)

just be happy that with your new card you can get a better score at High res than the old card could at low res :)

you'll also be happy when you play HL2
