Help,

I decided to give this game a try and see why so many people like it. But the game won't run in w2k. Between this, and other games that won't install or run in w2k, I am about ready just to switch back to 98.

Anyone got this game working?

You can check NT Compatible, it's a site that has users put in their experiences with games, applications, hardware etc when dealing with any NT based OS, have a look there...

I clocked the Celeron back down to 533, but got the same results:

Invalid memory reference right near the end of the setup program exeb though it says complete.

And, missing eax.dll when I go to run the game.

Thanks for the NT comp tip, I checked there before I bought the game, the site said it should work.

What gives....

It ran on my W2k box just fine. Hope you get it working. It's a great game (I have the playstation version now as well and I have to admit that if you don't mind the load times, it's better).

well if it's a retail copy you just brought, then try it on another computer with win2000 or even win98 to see if it works, if it doesn't get a replacement, if it does & you have all the latest patch on you computer for win2k & all your software & have no problems running other software except this game on your computer, then download the ff8 patch around 9MB & remember to have the latest win2k games support update. If you have other problems besides this, & you haven't reinstalled windows for awhile, then you might want to format & reinstall win2k. You might want to try to install the EAX unfied driver 1st, just look in the folders on the cd for it & install it manually & you should get it to work. FF8 isn't that good, I had it for pc & sold it, only played it once & never again. I have FF9 for PS & passed it in 9 days, much better than 8 & just as good as 7 or better.

I got the patch from somewhere on the Internet and got a memory error when installing the patch. If I reinstall, I may try 98, but will be ticked if it still doesn't work.

I've never heard of a game CD being defective, buy I guess it can happen.

Where do I get the compatibility update, doesn't show up ehen I hit Windows update.

Also, I got SP1, DX8 installed. (I tried it before these with no luck.)

Could I have damaged my cpu maybe? I assume that a cpu is all or nothing. Computer still works so CPU is fine.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep trying.

Perhaps its this SB Live giving me problems again... I installed the latest drivers, unless w2k didn't accept them and switched back to the native barebones drivers.

Computers can be such a hassle at times --

New question, anyone have much sucess with a 98SE w2k dual boot setup, using 98 for games and w2k for everything else.

I did that once, had no problems, but since I hardly used win2k, I decided to format & just reinstall win98.
