Where can I find this thing for a reasonable price? eBay has ridiculous prices (at least $50.00) Also how does this game look on PS3 and an HDTV?

It looks like the original. But the smoothing function the PS3 uses causes occasional minor glitches.

Looks pretty bad on PS3. Well, anything from the 1st playstation looks bad compared to current generation games. ePSXe emulator makes FFVII look really really good, too bad it glitches and freezes when you enter combat, making the game unplayable.

I still have the original PS1 FFVII I bought on launch day. Near mint condition.

I just started playing it and was surprised by the awful looking 3D character models, I somehow had the idea that before FF 9 they were pure 2D outside of the CGI cutscenes. By comparison the bad 3D in FF9 looks great.

Otherwise, the art design for the buildings is interesting in the first few minutes I've played and the story is alleged to be great.

If not, I'll be selling mine reasonably cheap soon :)

It's a 11yr old 3d game. No one should expect it to look good or even decent. You play this game for the story not the graphics.

There's something wrong, I was able to play through FF7 using ePSXe on a ti4600 back in the day, and yes it did look nice with the much improved resolution, AA, filtering, and 60 fps.

Back then I also remember FF7 still being available at Best Buy for around $20. It didn't seem so long ago either, what a strange feeling.

Great game, but I wouldn't pay $50 for an old PS1 game. I guess you can always buy it then sell it. Or just tor...er...guess I should not encourage or suggest that sort of thing here.

It was the only good FF of that generation.

This includes up and including the current (12? still haven't finished that travesty after 2 years.)

so yeah, it's probably worth it if you somehow like the mung that was released after it.

Other than that, stick to the NES or SNES FF games.

10 is the best. I was just thinking about this last night. As much as the gaming world is up FFVII's butt, 10 is by far, the best.

10's mechanics were great, but the story blew ass. Mainly because Tidus sucked HARD. The end game "twist" was really retarded too.

Well, this is what happens when a game becomes super popular (which took it a few years) and is no longer available in stores. I payed $50 for my copy too, so get over it. It was worth it to me.

You want?

Yes, as long as I don't have to pay an enormous sum for an old game.

exactly. Tidus was worthless. the voice acting was atrocious. The story was ridiculous. The writing was terrible. I wanted to punch that main chick every time she opened her yap. It destroyed the open world concept--let's not forget that; one of the main, overriding experiences of FF. Gone...and it looks like forever.

The only thing it had going for it was a well-conceived battle system, and Auron. Auron was cool. I would say 10 is better than 8, but at least 8 still had the explorable open world.

I liked X and XII a lot. I put more time into XII than I did into any FF since III.

hehe. I recently started playing xii again, seeing as how i never finished it after 2 years. played a little while, decided it sucked too much for my attention, laid it down for a year, picked it up for a few weeks, laid down for another year....I've been hovering at the ~80% story-completion all this time and still haven't finished it.

Other than the horrible battle system/gambit BS, my main gripe would be the sidequests and how un-related they are to the rest of the game. They are almost essential to get your characters to any kind of worthwhile level, yet there is no in-game manner to really become aware of them, or how to do them. meaning, you pretty much have to buy the book, or rely on internet doods that have plagiarised the book with their "original" faq/walkthrough posts. It also annoys me that they make stealing and enemy drops/poaching completely essential in this game. A lot of useless time trying to keep bazaar loot organized so you can unlock half of the useful items. The actual game seems about as half as long as all the previous, yet so much effort needs to be wasted on the sidequests that it just seems like major balancing issues.

I actually liked the battle system. This is the first FF that I ran around just fighting things and doing the hunts because I wanted to, not necessarily because I had to. I also never poached - just picked up loot and sold it. That was my one issue with the game - money was not as plentiful as in previous FF's. However, it really wasn't bad if you shift your buying mindset. In most FFs, I'm used to buying every single upgrade as soon as I can. Since there wasn't as much money in XII, I was forced to weigh the decision and skip a few iterations of weapons.

I do think it's stupid the way some of the best/rarest items came to be. I did Excalibur because it was possible, just annoying, but the lance or whatever the top weapon is, that was just dumb.

All in all, I really liked the game though.

yeah, that's my thing. The really good stuff is nigh impossible to get, unless you like grinding the kind of BS that is required. Apparently, with some of the loot, selling in the proper order is key, lest you want to spend even more hours grinding a rare bit again b/c they were wasted due to multiple recipes using the same thing being incomplete. blah! and some loot you can only get when poaching...

and characters being completely interchangeable/equal annoys me. I always preferred it when each character had specific roles. More strategery, that way ;)
sure, you can set them up with specific roles, but in the end, they all become the same. what else are you going to do with all those LP? oh yeah, don't get me started on LPs :p

Yea, the license grid was cool when you used it for character attributes, but those only lasted about 1/5 of the way through the game. After that i was just annoying and for the purpose of being able to equip weapons/armor.

I still have my launch day ps1 version and also have it for the pc with all the patches to get the 3d acceleration. Didnt realize these things cost so much now. I remember seeing the greatest hits green box for the ps1 version of the game at some gamestop for 20 bucks. That was about a year ago so I doubt they still have this. Try half dot com.

My big gripe about that is that it's stupid to have you license all this stuff when you still can't use a lot of it until the progress in the game allows you to do so.

I say you start off by having all the spells available from the start of the game and making them just really expensive... and those willing to invest the time into both earning the license points and cash to buy a lot of high level stuff are rewarded with making the rest of the game a little bit easier.

I quit playing about 9 months ago literally right before the last dungeon. I picked it up this past weekend and finished it just for completion's sake. I pretty much lost interest in the game after it being perfectly clear that there was NO character development. A great RPG will give you a real emotional connection with the characters in the game and really make you care whether they live or die in the finale. FFXII doesn't make me care about shit. The characters, their relationships with each other, and their ability to make me give a damn didn't develop at all over the entire span of the game.

I love the mechanics of the game, I love the battle system, and everything EXCEPT the story line and aforementioned gripes.

Reminds me I have the PC version somewhere, with all like 8 discs of it...have to find them and see how well I can get it to run on Vista...

I liked 7, 8, and 9 but really liked 9 the most. Beyond that only the Tactics series and 12 have done anything for me.

I started playing through 9 and I'm almost through the second disc. I haven't touched it in about 2 weeks, but it's fun to play those old games again.
