Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

Aikouka

Lifer
Anyone looking to pick this up? I've got it on reserve (I get a free Shinra UMD case 🙂). I've actually tried the game out and I'm a bit torn. Visually, the game looks great and you'd think it was more of a PS2 game rather than a PSP game (Square makes good use of backgrounds with minimal 3D to keep good frame rates... kind of like FF7 was on the PSX).

What gets to me is the battle system. It's like a weakened version of Kingdom Hearts where you always lock onto someone that you've engaged. Battles pretty much consist of you hitting 'X' a lot (it feels like Dynasty Warriors). You can roll and block and you change your cast using L or R. For example, I had to fight this monster (I think it was a Behemoth?) and I used mostly slash attacks and a Firaga to finish him off. It just feels so weird that I'm really not sure what I think.

Anyone have any thoughts? Play the Japanese version? Be a naughty boy and download that leaked US version? 😛

Oh and IGN rated the game 8.5/10: http://psp.ign.com/articles/860/860615p1.html

Square needs to stop making shitty FF7 games/movies. They're spending all of this time and money developing new, crappy games when they could make a ton of money by reshipping a graphic-updated version of the original FF7 on the PS3...

Has Square gone stupid?

Eh... from all accounts, this game appears to be far from "shitty."

I'm thinking of picking it up just so I can get the special edition from BB, but I haven't decided yet if I'm going to play it right now. I'm still playing through FFVIII.

Also, I'm holding out on the idea that they may pull a GoW: COO and release a bundle in a few months 🙁

Who says they're never going to make one?

The FF7 in all iterations is making them a ton of money already. Why not hold out on a FF7 remake until times are tough? Even if it's the shittiest game in the world, it'll still be a golden egg for them. They're still enjoying good success, so there's no reason to go ahead with a revision instead of milking it with prequels and other games.

This game is FANTASTIC. I admit that I'm playing the leaked US version, but it is just phenomenal in almost every way. It is easily one of my favorite games so far this year.

Its funtastic for awhile, then you realize that its just the same play mechanics over and over and over and over and over again...

That's every game ever made, really. There is a surprising amount of variation and depth as you go further into the game.

interesting. long as its not play 5 minutes with 5 minutes of FMV then 5 minuets of playtime etc etc.

I love RPG's. but got tired of the all the video they were starting to put in them.

Buy the original! :angry;

I plan to buy it when it comes to Aus, FFVII was my favourite game of all time.

Agreed.

We already have redone versions of every game from 1 through 6. They need to start on 7.
And if they ever redo 8 they need to remove the monster leveling system.

If they didn't yank the weird leveling system out of FF2, I wouldn't expect to see it going out of FF8. Maybe tweak it so you draw more every time you do a draw (less grinding), but there was nothing _fundamentally_ broken about it.

I'm not sure they really need to remake FF8 and FF9 yet. For one thing, they're still in production. For another, they actually don't look nearly as bad as FF7.

What's this special edition at BB?
I didn't see anything about it in the weekly circular whereas CC was offering a $10 GC w/purchase.

I haven't really played it much as the battle system really pushes me away from the game. Against multiple opponents, it really feels messy as you select a random enemy in front of you. So I guess the only way to select the one you want is to keep pressing the lock button. I would've been more than happy with the aging turn-based style.

There are quite a few FMVs and cut-scenes in the game so far though.

EDIT:

I should add that you also cannot skip the FMVs and stuff. You can pause them, but not skip.

In general, battle fields are small enough and your attacks have a wide enough spread that I don't find this to be a huge problem. You also need to kill all your enemies to end a battle (with a couple exceptions), so specific targetting isn't as important. Dodging also becomes critically important in the later game - just taking hits is not a viable option. I like the combat system, but I can see why others might not.

You can skip the CGI summons and the flashbacks. The shorter stuff, no, you can't.

The other thing I'll say is that I love the sound track.

I sold my PSP (original version) awhile back and am planning to get a new one when this game is released. I was hoping that Sony and SE would put together a special edition combo like they did for Japan. 🙁

Am I the only person who doesn't want companies to start remaking old games? I get enough remakes at the movies.

I think if the game is good and they don't really hurt it in the "translation"... I wouldn't mind. I remember how stoked I was for the Chrono Trigger Resurrection project. That is until Square threw a C&D in their face. Watching the trailer 'til this day brings a tear to my eye 🙁.

I do find it interesting how people dislike sequels and prequels to Final Fantasy where I remember back in the day, such spin-offs were actually desired.

I would kill for another Chrono Trigger or a remake of the original. Chrono Cross did nothing for me.

I find it interesting that people are so self-centered that they actually campaign for companies not to do games. "I won't like that, so it shouldn't exist!"

Brilliant!

Have put a few hours into it.

Let me summarize the game for you.

XXX[]XXX[] cure once and a while then watch cut scene, and then repeat over and over and over again. Also watch stupid jackpot thing once and a while, it has to be one of the most stupid combat systems I have ever seen.

Well, I've actually beaten the game, so you can consider my own opinion, perhaps.

I've got to disagree: the combat system is really quite good, and the randomness of the DMW system makes for much more exciting battles. The cut scenes don't tend to be THAT long, and the story, graphics, and sound are quite phenomenal.

If you're only a few hours in, yes, you're mashing buttons. Once you've hit 10-15, you've got to execute dodges and strategy if you're going to win.

Thanks for the info guys! Looks like its getting positive reviews everywhere. Argg Australia has to lag behind so much cause of Euro and their translations :angry;
