I've tried googling this question but can't seem to find an answer anywhere.. I figured trying ATOT couldn't hurt.

Anyway, in FF7, do I have to level all the characters evenly or can I level three characters only and have the game keep all the other characters at similar levels?
 
Actually, I seem to recall reading that the game will keep all your characters within a certain number of levels (maybe 5 levels lower than your main character). But I never tried relying on this myself.

Or maybe I'm thinking about a different game.
