Final Fantasy Ultimate Box Collection

Ok, first I think it's very cool that they are doing this, but honestly how do they expect to sell many units if they require that the buyer already own every system. Kudos to those of you who have a PS2 to dust off and a PSP sitting in a storage bag somewhere, but for many of us that isn't the case. Estimated to be about ~$450 dollars, they are asking a ridiculous amount of money considering that all they are doing are basically making new copies of old media with a new label on it. I might consider it if they were all modified to work on the PS3, but for original media? Screw that.

What do you all think about it?

it's just a collectors item. people who actually want to play the games can get them for far cheaper on ebay etc.

I do wonder, 30 years from now will anybody care? Unless the next FF do something different the brand is dying a slow death. It created a style of gameplay that many other games emulated to great success. But the Great JRPG is a dying genre. Things could change.. but in 10 or more year i doubt FF will be around in any RPG form.. they already licence it on other stuff (the fighting game did die on the vine didnt it?) for collector value the brand still needs to have recongnition.. but who knows.. i sure would never have thouhgt and orginal copy for the PS2 would go for waht it does..

Do you have any concrete data or are you just using your own opinion as fact?

The idea of a "great" game, or JRPG, is a purely subjective one, so you answered your own question. I consider FFX a "great" JRPG, plenty of people would probably beg to differ with me.

Going back to the topic of the thread though... I kind of agree that if all the games had been in some way ported to the PS3, even if just wrapped in some kind of emulator like the PSN re-releases, I would be interested. Probably wouldn't buy most of those games over again just to be able to play them on the PS3, but I would certainly never turn my nose up at someone giving it to me as a gift.

It actually works the other way. The shittier the series gets and the more the former company dies out, the more valuable and collectible the old school games become.

No real hard core collector cares about anything beyond PS2 if that. PS1 and earlier is where the big money titles are.

It's the crappy current generation that is driving up collector value and making retro gaming suddenly so popular.

Part of the problem is that everyone's afraid to pick a REAL DAMN GENRE, stick to it, and DO IT WELL.

Instead, we have these mishmash, hodge-podge, "be all things to all peole" genre blender games that are a jack of all trades and master of none.

Survival horror is dead. It's become now mostly mindless action with gore and monsters, to appeal to the shooter fans.
Sims are dead, it's become arcade run n' gun.
RPGs are dying, or morphing into Mass Effect style "shooterpgs", where a few dialogue choices mixed with copious amounts of shooting and cover taking constitute an "RPG".

FWIW, for all the devil's advocates, I LOVE shooters. FPS, mindless action, what have you. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE IN EVERY OTHER GENRE, though. I love provolone cheese. I also love ice cream. I DON'T NEED THEM MIXED. Just stick to a damn genre, do it well, and stop trying to bring in fans of other genres and end up pleasing no one.
