Final Fantasy type game?

I want to play a game that's like Final Fantasy (classic Nintendo), simple 2D playing field, simple graphics, etc. Any RPG's out there for the PC, that are free to download? Or did they port FF to the computer and can be bought online?

FF7 was ported to the computer a while ago. I think all of the series from then on have had PC ports, though 7 was the only one that was marketed much.

As far as 2d RPGs... geez... hrm... there's a site devoted to RPGs made with the RPGMaker program. I can't remember where it is but there are some damn good ones out there. (like a Metroid one!)

Well, you could always just find the rom and get an emulator if you want to go down that road...

I'm in the middle of playing Chrono Trigger right now. Great stuff.

About 6 years ago I started accumulating a lot of ROMs for emulators, on a previous machine that has since died. A few years ago I attempted to find these ROMs again and they're gone - the entertainment system companies cracked down on ROM downloads and shutdown a lot of sites.

I just got a PSOne and FF IX off eBay for $35 shipped, a PSOne by itself goes for $20-30 shipped.

For the PSOne you can get all of the FF games plus Chrono Trigger, for about $15 each for FF 7-9 and $15 each for the "chronicles", "anthology", "origins" double-game sets with the 2D goodness you're looking for. I just ordered a couple from "MegaBuys" but they havem't arrived yet.

So instead of messing with ROM emulators or buggy GLIDE layers for nV, why not just get a real PSOne? (unless you're looking for warez)

It's a thought... I'll suggest that to my wife for Christmas. 🙂

I don't really want to buy any entertainment systems until the PS3 comes out. Although I've been keeping my eye out for a Super Nintendo at garage sales. Zelda: Link to the Past is the best game EVER.

Since I only paid $35 with a $15 game included, I figure I can always re-sell it if I decide to move to a PS2 or 3.

I think FF7 was the first one ported to PC, and it requires a 3dfx card to get the full visual effect. Last I checked it was a "collectors item" and buying the PSOne + game would be as cheap.

The roms are pretty easy to find. You can just google X (game name) rom and you'll find it. Do you happen to have an EB or GameCrazy anywhere near you? They sell used SNES consoles for really cheap and I'm pretty sure the carts are relatively inexpensive also. If you never played Chrono Trigger then that's the first one you'll want imho.
