A friend of mine is arguing that average people don't play games like Final Fantasy Seven.

I argue anyone from nerd to mainstream kid can play it.

Anyone know where to find PSX sales figures for like FF7 vs GTA2 or anything?

Yep. It was the culmination of the series, although a radical departure from the previous ones that I love so dearly. Then they just said "geez, these really long video sequences are the PERFECT things to put into a battle!"
 
With the advertising campaign they ran for FF7, it better be a popular game. When you show 29 seconds of CGI footage and 1 second of gameplay set to heart-pounding music, you can hook just about anyone.😛

LOTS of people played that game. RPG's aren't main steam is basicaly what he is saying though its probably one of the most popular out there.

Once they started highlighting key phrases in conversations and having your party magically get healed of status ailments after every battle, they stopped being RPGs and became movies that you press "A" to.
 
people bitch about it being too much like a movie, but its just old habits that wont die, i personally loved 7, liked 8, didnt like 9, loved 10 (was such an amazing story), and am playing ffxi now
 
8 was amazing, and 10 was simply amazing too but you can't categorize them because of their platforms.

I love the entwinement of movie and videogame. The MGS series and FF series have done a great job at this.

I love it.

If you can't move on from your old platforms then you're going to get buried.
