I'm starting research on Final Fantasy for a peice that I am doing on RPG's. THe linage of FF is confusing to me. I"ve been downloading roms so I can play them and the numbering system is all mixed up. Some are 123 some are I, II, III. BUt the confusing lays deeper than this. FF 6 (japaneese) is the same game as the english FF III. Whats the deal. Can anybody explain of post a link of relieve my confusion? Thanks. So far google has been no help.

THere is nothing wrong with the numbering system.
Japanese gets releases that we never get here.

Its for research. That allows me the moral flexability to play for 15 mins or so. I generally don't like RPG's but I have been interested in them lately. I would like to find a good one to play for real on the PC or xbox. Refer to previous post

FF 3a (american) = FF 6j (japanese)
FF 2a = FF4j

Just don't use the American numbering and it'll all make sense

FF 1, 2, 3 were all for Famicom (NES).
FF 4, 5, 6 were all for Super Famicom (SNES).

When they released 4 and 6 to the US, they renamed them to 2 and 3 respectively because Final Fantasy (original) was the only other one released here.

Final Fantasy Games:

FF I
FF II
FF III
FF IV (FF 2 in US)
FF V
FF VI (FF 3 in US)
FF VII (movie coming out soon, FF: Advent Children or something like that, not to be confused w/ FF: The spirits within)
FF VIII (which was probably the worst of them all from what I hear)
FF IX
FF X
FF X-2
FF XI (Online only)
FF XII (coming soon)

Then you also have:

FF Mystic Quest (SNES)
FF Tactics (PS1)
FF Tactics Advance (GBA)
FF Crystal Chronicles (GC)

Oh yeah, PS re-relased a bunch of them, called anthology and whatnot.

Anything else I'm missing?

FF 8 wasn't all that bad. Mystic Quest was definately my most hated version.

I had my two cents because its for a paper. I just want to say that FF Legend 1-2-3 are absolutely not FF games. Can someone give him the japanese game its based on. Square just didn't want to confuse buyers at the time. I think its the encestor of Saga Frontier of something.

FF adventure is Secret of Mana is Seikend Densetsu is Sword of mana is .... same game all of them.

I'm pretty sure you're right on all of those points you made. I figured it was worth mentioning those games though as some people do consider them to be FF games, even though they originally weren't. That reminds me, wasn't SMB 2 originally NOT an SMB game early in its development?

FFVII thru FFX-2 have all been great for me. They all were able to suck me into a world where you can almost belive was real. I haven't had a chance to play anything above FFVII though.
