I've only ever liked the pure turn based combat systems such as was in FFX and Lost Odyssey (not a Final Fantasy but good example regardless). The only thing keeping the FFX system from achieving perfection was the need to switch out characters in order to share XP.

In regards to the question of remake versus remaster, it's definitely a remake. This a top to bottom recreation and they have not been bashful about saying that game design will probably stray from the original.

I really liked the battle system in Bravely Default which was close to how Xenogears was I think. Turn based with the faster characters being able to attack first and unlimited time to plan your actions.

The Xenogears battle system was pretty cool. I loved fighting with the Gears. Is there a HD remake of it yet? That is a game that could really use modernizing.

No and there won't be. The creators of Xenogears left Square at the time of the merger with Enix and Square owns the rights to Xenogears. Even though Xenosaga has been called a prequel to Xenogears, they really don't refer to it as such and the games don't have that much in common anyway. Monolith is made up of many of the team who worked on Xenogears and they created Xenoblade chronicles which while having a similar name has nothing to do with Xenogears or Xenosaga.

The short of it is that Xenogears is owned by SquareEnix and Monolith can't use it (I don't know that they would anyway).
