I was just reading IGN and noticed that FF13 was one of their biggest disappointments of the year.

One thing that jumped out was this:
... and then there's the gameplay, which consists of essentially moving in a straight line for the first twenty hours, repeatedly hitting X.

I bought this game the night it came out, played it for 8 hours straight, and haven't played it since because I literally felt like I was walking in a straight line and pressing X the whole time.

Does the game get better after roughly 20 hours? How long is the game in total? I've been considering playing again, but I wanna know if it gets any better. As of right now, it's simply one of the worst games I've ever played...

I enjoyed it well enough. It does pick up a bit towards the end, but not drastically so. Definitely one of the worse FF's. Took me about 40 hours I want to say. For reference, here's what I think of the other FF's:

FF1-3: Old, outdated, didn't hold up well so I don't really count them :p

FF4: Pretty good. Enjoyed it up until I had to get some Mithril Armor for a gravity cave or something like that and got bored.

FF5: LOVED the job system, but the story was meh.

FF6: Godly. Great battle system, great story.

FF7: Godly-er. Loved pretty much every single thing about the game. In my top 5 of all time.

FF8: Decent. I HATED the 'drawing' system where you steal magic from enemies. It more or less ruined the game for me.

FF9: Did not like. Forgettable everything.

FF10: My favorite battle and leveling systems of all. I love the sphere grid. Terrible story, though, with mostly terrible characters. I liked Lulu and Rikku :p

FF12: Forgettable everything like 9. Took me about 71 hours to beat, and I won't do it again.

FF13: Terrible story, decent battle/leveling system, decent characters.

Sorry for the probably needlessly wordy post. I'm at work and bored :p

No. It doesn't. Seriously. I almost never trust IGN"s reviews, but thats the one thing they got right. I wanted to LOVE FF13, but it really IS walking down a corridor with a fight every 30 seconds of pressing X repeatedly.

There are slight instances where it gets better but then it crashes again.

It's better than FF14, but that's not saying much.

I got about 20 hours into FF13, and stopped playing. Just too much repetition, and not a very interesting story.

Ff13 was ok. Got bored of it after the sunleth waterscape, which was an amazing level. Still consider Ff10 as the best, followed by 9,7,8

Damn I just ordered this. I will probably enjoy it I don't have an RPG for my ps3 yet anyway.

I love how a lot of people love FF7,8 & 10 yet completely regard the rest of the series as shit. All the games are awesome, end of story. While FXIII deviated a lot, I see it as the mistake that will force SE to go back in the other direction, where they should have been in the first place.

I wouldn't mind a remake of 7's leveling and combat system with a direct sequel from 7 (fuck advent children).

However I actually liked 13's combat system, but despised the leveling. The story gets better later on tho.

The game gets much better around 30/40 hours in.

I actually like the combat system.

I don't think understand how people can complain about the combat system in a FF game... It is a turn based RPG; wtf do you expect? My only complaints with it were the forcing you to split up the party. I never used some of the characters (because Hope was a whiny little bitch) and disliked how they played.

The story is not bad, the game looks amazing, it is a JRPG, and the leveling system is decent. Nothing really bad about this game.

I expect to be able to control how my characters act. I don't like the AI handling 2/3 of the battle with the remaining 1/3 being autobattle. There was almost 0 interaction in battles other than changing paradigms every once in a while.

Also, the damn AOE attacks. They were obvious and easy to dodge so that it would only hit one person at once, but NO you cna't control anyone so you can't dodge anything, even though if he had been 2 feet to the left, he wouldn't have died.

There is a long list of grievances I have.

Have you ever played any other turn based RPG? You select the type of attack you want, and your characters do it, in turn.

Played more than I care to remember.

Normally gameplay is this

Char 1
Attack
Char 2
Magic Fire
Char 3
Magic Cure
Char 4
Attack

FFXIII is

Autobattle, autobattle, autobattle, paradigm change, autobattle

I'm probably in the minority here, but I like the shift away from directly controlling everyone in the party. I really don't want to sit there and micromanage every action. That's why I like the FFXIII battle system (and why I really enjoyed FFXII's gambit system). Square Enix wanted us to experience fast-paced combat, and entering every single command would bog things down. I mean, you can always choose not to autobattle and do whatever you want.

Like most of you, I didn't really start to enjoy the game until about the last third, when all of the roles are available to everyone. Then you can fully take advantage of all of the paradigms. There are a few really epic fights in the last couple of chapters.

Battle system was meh, anything out of battle you either watch a long cut-scene or walk in a straight line. Uuber mehhhhh.

I'm in the minority.. but I actually liked the game. Loved the battle system. Yes, it was linear, the story was weak in the beginning, but things picked up after 30 hours or so. I really enjoyed the Grand Pulse aspect as well.

FF13 was a horrible purchase. I could only take so many walk in straight path, emo crying scene, auto battle, repeat segments. Why do they have to make all the characters over the top annoying? One guy has the mentality of a bulldog chasing a steak, the one chick is super happy, the other boy is a pussy, and so on.

I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and thought 13 was utter crap. One of the worst RPG's ever.

Heh. Sounds like pretty much every Final Fantasy game I've played (FF7-FF12). Well, except Final Fantasy VII were you were pushing the circle button instead.

Combat is just too easy in these games for any desicion making on the player's part to actually matter in most battles.

My first complaint about the game would be the bosses. They are really weak simply because you could debuff the crap out of them. Second would be that i was able to finish the game using nothing only but the base weapons(1st form,lvl1) except for one character (lightning) who's weapon is in the second form. Third is how difficult it is to earn money. You gain no money from fighting so you rely on loots for money majority of which are really cheap.

Anyway the game is pretty linear except near the end where you could do the side missions
