if you have a lot of patience, a black belt becomes the best fighter in the game

And as an aside, did anyone else ever notice that the sprite for the Master looks exactly like the Ambiguously Gay Duo from SNL? I'm surprized there wasn't a law suit.

I remember nintendo power had a contest to see who could beat the game first with 4 white mages. A few people actually did, but I guess it was ridiculously difficult. I'm getting old. 🙁

Difficult, but possible.
You just need to wander around a lot more, build levels, and go into the Temple of Fiends at a really high level.

The IMPOSSIBLE party is 4 black belts. They have Zero magic and crappy physical/magical defense. They always get wiped out by the specialty monsters in the lowest levels.

uh the monk becomes the kungfu master (blackbelt) or whatever ,

the thief grows up to be the ninja =)

I remember trying out

Fighter, Thief, Redmage, White mage

on my first go, that was a challenge since you had to lvl up so much just to pass some of the quests.

Later on F/Monk/WM/BM for ease, 2F's /WM/BM is even easier.

My party was Fighter, Blackbelt, White Mage, Black Mage. Fighter was the best melee fighter until I finally got the blackbelt upgraded to kungfu master who sucked before the upgrade, Black Mage has some nasty spells, White Mage is excellent for part healing for those particuarly nasty fight.

Little known fact, if you have a thief in your party and you have his character graphic representing the party while walking around, you don't need keys to go through doors. Thieves suck though. Red Mages can't get the higher level spells and aren't that great at fighting.
