because they are much more expensive than some SS pipe when the OE cat goes bad.

if you are boosted, cats are a huge power hog

Nah. STOCK cats are horrible, but good high flow cats make virtually no difference on or off even on a boosted car. The cat cross section is designed to be bigger than the pipe in such a way that even with the restriction, the cat flows no worse than the smaller pipe itself, making it in visible.

Yeah, pretty much this.

I was just cheap at the time....$300 without cat, ~$600 with. That said, I have to put a few of the stock cats back on for smog check next year. I'm temped to try my fiancee's car as-is with a single high-flow. Supposedly passes but I'm not convinced.

Oddly enough, that's the same reason I do. 😛
