I wouldn't have the patience to stand there while someone ranted for 20 minutes. After 5 minutes I'd have been telling the guy enough is enough. You have to shut blowhards down early. They see they're getting room to bloviate and they run with it.

Just laugh. They'll either stop bloviating to ask what you're laughing about or they'll throw a punch. Either way you win.

Sucks, just because the show was excellent and Clarkson was definitely a big part of that. The BBC definitely made the right choice, you cannot keep someone after they pull a stunt like that.

I do think that in the past, some of the Top Gear scandals were a complete joke, as if people were purposefully looking for ways to generate scandals. But in this case, there is no way that it could be misinterpreted.

in 20 mins I would be eating a kebab from one of many kebab trucks on street corners. They still have those in the UK right?

Indeed. And keep in mind the BBC is a public broadcaster. Private companies can get away with stuff at times - and indeed if this were an American TV company I'd expect them to sweep it under the rug - but the BBC is accountable to the UK public.

That said, Clarkson and the rest of the trio could easily go somewhere else and make Not Top Gear and a lot of those viewers would follow. The BBC is in a no-win position.

lol, I could see them starting Not Top Gear with their mostly-tame racing driver, The Gits. :p

maybe clarkson did it on purpose because he wanted an out. If he'd just not renewed his contract, he'd the hated one.

if he wanted to do it on purpose, I think he would have slapped a top BBC official instead of a member of his own staff.

He's still the hated one. I blame Clarkson first & the BBC second for this.

I can hate him & want him back on the air though, can't I?

As opposed to now, where he's the... victim? People are going to blame Clarkson regardless, and deservedly so, since you can't go around hitting people over something as absurd as not getting a steak. I mean, finish the phrase "Top Gear ended because..." without blaming Jeremy. I don't think people are going to hate him any more for this than if he had ended his contract after the season, but he was going to get 100% of the blame in either scenario.

I don't know, I'm guessing if he'd have done that he'd be looking at criminal charges.

I do think he had been intentionally pushing buttons to try and force the BBC's hand for some time, but I think this specific instance is just him being a petulant bitch and it got the best of him.

OJ killed two people and got away with it because he was a star..

Sounded like nothing more than a bar fight to me.. If they want to throw away 300 million viewers so be it. I for one will be using this to finally unplug for DTV, the only reason I have been hanging on is for BBC America.

OJ Didn't get away with it for "being a star". He got away with it for being rich in America. The elite not facing consequences in our legal system is par for the course for those with excellent lawyers working the backwards game. Has little to do with star power.

OJ didn't get away with it, period. Sure, he was found not guilty because the prosecution royally screwed the pooch, but his guilt was so heavily assumed by everybody regardless of the verdict that he became utterly toxic. He was successfully sued by the Goldman family for basically everything he owned, and his acting career dried up immediately after the initial accusations, so he had no real income. He tried to pimp out the story on a few occasions that amounted to fuck all, and he got caught multiple times for petty theft, armed robbery and kidnapping, and is now in prison, ostensibly for life. So, yeah, OJ "got away with it," in the sense of he wasn't found criminally guilty for the murders. But no one would trade places with OJ post-trial, regardless of his wealth and fame; that guy's life was (deservedly) shot to hell. Y'all make it sound like he's sitting on a gold-plated yacht lighting Cuban cigars with unsold copies of "If I Did It."

Semi-necro.

Announced today that Top Gear returns in May with host Chris Evans and co-presenter Matt LeBlanc. The BBC series also retains custody of The Stig and will likely have a 3rd host, according to Evans probably a female.

Still no official word on the premiere of Clarkson, Hammond and May's Amazon series, best guesses are fall 2016.

Semi-necro.

Announced today that Top Gear returns in May with host Chris Evans and co-presenter Matt LeBlanc.

From the official press release:

Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for your new Top Gear host… Mr Matt LeBlanc!

Yes, the fastest-ever Star in a Reasonably Priced Car – he famously set an as-yet unbeaten lap time of 1m 42.1s in the Kia cee’d – will join Chris Evans when the new series premieres in May.

“As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter,” said Matt. “What a thrill!”
Chris Evans said of his new TG presenter: “Matt’s a lifelong fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining Top Gear. Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road trip ideas.

“We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year,” he added.

Matt of course, is no stranger to TG screens. After setting that scorching lap time, he reappeared in the following series to test the new Kia cee’d against its predecessor, drove The Stig around in a McLaren MP4-12C, and recently presented the standalone spin-off Top Gear: The Races.

We’ll have more news on additional Top Gear cast members shortly…

TG is proud to announce a brand new presenter for Series 23 :)

After seeing him in interviews, he doesn't seem particularly charismatic without a script. If I wanted to watch Top Gear without the jokes, I'd watch Fifth Gear.

He's fine in interviews, so it's not that he's bad without a script. But I don't see him writing material as good as the other guys did. Hopefully he'll have a ghost on staff to punch his stuff up to be more entertaining.

i heard strange internet rumors that he was actually incapable of driving and delivering lines at the same time ...

anyway yeah, i agree that Clarkson & co. were funny and when you remove them, you get Top Gear pre-2002, which is essentially as boring as Fifth Gear.

I think those rumors are attributable to Chris Evans, not to LeBlanc. I've also heard rumors that Evans gets motion sick easily and has puked from spirited driving. If either rumor is true Chris might have to take on the James May role and drive the slow stuff while Matt and the other presenter flog the faster cars.

I thought he was pretty likable as a guest on TG, and he's great at playing a slightly elevated version of himself on Episodes.

Good catch! I didn't know it was a real story rather than a rumor. More pictures, definitely Evans in the helmet and Sabine Schmitz was driving. Another rumor is that she would be the 3rd presenter.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...ar-VOMIT-taking-spin-star-Sabine-Schmitz.html

I was about to hate on Top Gear for not casting another Brit (I love hearing them say the Nisssn 350 Zed.

Joey as the driving and car expert would be terrible, but Joey competing against Sabine actually has the potential to be brilliant.
