When did Fina start demanding to hold your credit card hostage while you fill up with gas??

The last few places I have been too want to put a deposit on the card, hold it while you fill up, and then give it back when the transaction is complete. I have walked out of each one after they said this. Too bad Finas are about 80% of the gas stations in my area.

Im in New Mexico, are you guys seeing this in other states at other gas stations? Am I alone in thinking this is just wrong?

um, i think they're just doing a pre-auth on it for $100 or something. it's not a final transaction.

Dont you just pay at the pump?

Thats what I tried and the little screen told me to see the attendant. The clerks told me about the deposit and holding the card while inside. I said sorry, I will never leave my credit card with a stranger and then left. (restaurants are a different matter)

Unless I have completely missed the boat the last 10 years I have had a credit card, isnt it supposed to authorize when swiped, therefore guaranteeing they will be paid?

They probably started doing that when you started needing a co-signer for a loan to pay for gas.

Up in Canada...we're not riddled with crime, so we are allowed to pump our gas BEFORE we pay.

A few of the stations around here (FL) make you enter your zip code before it
will authorize you to start pumping.

Well things are different here. Gas has gone up from perhaps 2% of a household's budget to maybe 4%, assuming about $35K/year income. I mean come on, it's 2%!!!!!!! We NEED to steal gas just to be able to afford a new iPhone, and Starbucks coffee! Lives are at risk!

I have never had to leave my card with anyone and I've filled gas in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington in the past 3 months. I've been around.

No but it sucks.

??? Every time I've filled in Oregon I self-pumped. Yeah that's only a total of about 3 times, but I still didn't see any full-service stations.
