film SLR camera slow dying?

I think that in the future film cameras will be about like records are now with a small, but devoted following. Just as there are people that love the "vinyl sound" or using them as tools for DJ purposes, there will be people that love the "film look" or use it for various art purposes.

I love my DSLR, but I have been thinking of finding a cheap film SLR to experiment with. I could even do super long nighttime exposures with no noise.

You can get refurbished AE-1 on Ebay, like new w/ warranty.

Buying "cheap" often gets you a camera with some issues. These are 30ish years old.

I agree that film will always have a following. 35mm is still used a great deal in developing countries and fuji still makes and sells a great deal of it. Eventually you will be able to get the look of film on digital. Fuji cameras have aleady attempted to emulate velvia, without real success. But that will only get better. Devotees to film will never be satisfied, but there aren't a lot of new film devotees being created.

There is a lot of film "energy" in toy cameras (Holga, Diana) using 120 and 35 film. There is a also a lot of fans of the Trip 35 and of certain half-frame cameras like the original Pen.

I missed the Trip the first time around, but bought one last year and had it refurbished. Neat camera that takes very sharp/clear pics. Everything is always in focus and it is instantly ready to take a shot.

Those of us who just like cameras will always have fun shooting the old ones. In the firearms world this would be like the guys who shoot blackpowder or do the cowboy action shoots.

one is film, the other is a 5D Mark 2, using Nik's software "film simulation"

It would be nice to know more about what film and what camera. Also, what did each image go through before making it here. Just based on the highlights I would say the one on the right is film. The one on the left just doesn't look "right" to me, but I would really need to see the full image to be sure.

okay, background:

the film used is velvia 100. Camera, Nikon FE. Lens. 28mm f/2.8

DSLR:

canon 5D Mark 2. 24-70 f/2.8L Nik Software Color Effex Pro 3.0 "Film Effects = Velvia 100"

Film, Scanned through Epson Scanner (forgot what model...)

I'm sticking with Film on the right. If the one on the left is film, there was a problem when it was developed.

that's because one uses film simulation, and the other actually is the film! The goal was to get the digital to mimic film using software!

JR, that's right! Film easily destroys digital when it comes to the highlight details!
