Chicago and San Fransisco are probably distant second or thirds.

That's pretty interesting. How do they exactly calculate 'size' here? The total number of different banks present in the city? According to the article that you posted, NYC, Charlotte, Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston are the top for "Assets By City of the Top 5 Banks in the U.S" But that's only for the top 5 banks. I'd be surprised if Birmingham is in the top 5 in importance for banking...but still, Alabama moving on up.

It is by amount of assets. Birmingham is second only to NY in the amount of Top 50 banks headquartered here.
