In the season premiere that aired Sunday on ABC, Teri Hatcher's character, Susan, goes in for a medical checkup and is shocked when the doctor suggests she may be going through menopause.

"Listen, Susan, I know for a lot of women the word `menopause'" has negative connotations. You hear `aging,' `brittle bones,' `loss of sexual desire,'" the gynecologist tells her.

"OK, before we go any further, can I check these diplomas? Just to make sure they aren't, like, from some med school in the Philippines?" Susan fires back.

WOW, I can't believe some people actually took offense to a lame joke on a stupid FICTIONAL show said by a DITZY character.

What's truly ironic is that on a show that revolves around scandals, cheating, and SEX after sex after sex, that this is what charges people up, wow..

What's even worse is ABC apologizing. Can we protest that we're offended by their apology?

Stereotypes are funny; all these complainers do is reconfirm a stereotype they wish to abolish.

If they said "some medical school in Texas" what makes you think the result would be anything different?

Wouldn't it be illegal for someone to practice medicine in the US if all they had was a medical diploma from the Philippenes?

Are we allowed to discuss the topic? If not maybe this thread should just be locked.

It is my opinion that this "controversy" is much ado about nothing. Hardly surprising that a corporation like Disney would fold like a wet blanket under the mildest of criticism for something that could barely be construed as offensive. Seems like the hypersensitive crowd is really out in force lately.

Call me crazy, but I honestly can't see what that has to do with anything?

Yes and no. If that is all they have, yes. That is, if they have no license to practice medicine, it would be illegal, but it would not matter where their degree came from or even if they had no degree. If you don't have a medical license, you cannot practice medicine. And FYI, a degree is not required to get a license to practice medicine.

I wonder how everyone would react if the same joke was made to your profession, your college, or your home country.

The joke was in bad taste and was made without any truth. I've heard only good things about doctors and nurses from the philippines.

24 has altered content for fear of offending Muslims. Sutherland even spoke in a disclaimer during a commercial break saying that the American Muslim community stands beside their fellow Americans against terrorism.

heh, like i said, shouldn't we be more worried about our own US students going to the carribean to go to med school after they've been rejected by US schools? No one finds this weird?

I think highly of medicine in the Philippines and personally take offense to the quip.

In fact when vacationing there and feeling sick, I visited a local doctor where I got rebulbed and andrometiculated for less than $7k. I'm still not sure what that means or what it was for but he said I needed it to survive...and I have survived, so philippine doctors rock!:p

An MD from the Caribbean schools does not allow you to practice in the US.

If someone was seriously offended by that dumb comment on a dumb TV show about dumb housewives, they are an oversensitive whiner and seriously need to relax a bit. This applies regardless of whether or not you're from the Phillipines personally or have a SO who is. Geez.

Well, I can take a joke, so I'd probably react by laughing.
