I'm buying a few cuts of filet mignon for me and a few friends, and I was wondering how much I should serve to each person. I'm thinking somewhere around 12 ounces or so?

Serving of meat = 3oz. Nobody eats 3oz of meat except nutritionists, and the dumb people who listen to them. Get as much as you can without going broke.

holy cow! 12 oz is way too much for a filet...it would be like 6" thick. unless of course you mean 2 smaller ones, then that would be cool. another alternative...1 6-8oz filet, 1 lobster tail.

The 8 oz filets I saw were pretty thin, so I think 12 ounce filets will be perfect, especially if butterflied.

edit: 8 oz = 1/2 lb, right?

DAMN THE IMPERIAL SYSTEM.

That's like a few bites, tops...

without fat or bone 3-4 ounces of meat along with ample veggies is more than enough food.A good steak is meant to be chewed and savored not woofed down like it was Alpo.

omaha steaks doesn't even sell 12 oz filets for reference.

the standard "restaurant size" is 6oz. some places have 8oz. a few novelty restaurants have 10oz.

8oz - 1/2lb. 1lb = 16oz.

Actually 8 oz is a pretty nice sized filet, average is probably closer to 6 ounces or so. 12 oz is a REALLY nice size piece of beef. If you're having an ordinary dinner with a baked potato, salad, bread and butter, another veggie, etc, 8 oz cuts will be plenty.

I easily eat 12oz in two 6oz portions, but I agree that 8oz is probably the most reasonable amount.

Uhh, so you eat 24oz of steak? I'd like to see that.

If you arent serving anything else with it... 24 oz is very doable. Just dont count on having room for a baked potato, or more than 16oz of drink.

Well consider that the steak will be preceded by a light appetizer, served with a portabella cap and a cream based sauce, an artichoke, and a starch (haven't decided on either risotto, a pilaf, a potato dish, or bread) and followed by cheesecake and a coconut milk drink dessert

How big are you?

Anyway, I'd go 12-16oz. I mean, if you're going to have steak, have some freaking steak.
