Filesend speeds - local network - Problem?

Back when I had a linux box I could copy 500 mb from my windows machine to my linux machine in like 4 mins or something reasonably quick. (I ripped all my x-files DVDs to divx so that I could watch 'em on my computers (only "TVs" I have in my apartment) without having to swap DVDs) I used to be able to copy a season in maybe an hour or less from Windows to Linux now today what was once a linux machine is now a Windows XP machine and I tried copying a season over - 22 eps - and It's been running for nearly 5.5 hours and it's still NOT done. My question is, how could it be so much faster to copy from Windows -> Linux through Samba and so slow to copy from Windows to Windows? I'm a networking nub for the most part though.
