Ok here is my setup.

Internet going to one Linksys Router with ip of 192.168.168.1 with DHCP turned on.

Second router in my room has a cable going from a LAN port from router 1 to my WAN port. my router is using default settings (192.168.1.1 with DHCP turned on as well)

Here is my question: I need to share files between a computer connected to the LAN port on router one with files on my computer which is connected to a LAN port on my router (router 2)

they both use 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask if that matters. How can I access files on the other local network on router 1 from my computer connected to router 2?

Is this even possible? Thanks

turn of dhcp, plug from WAN to LAN port, then you are on one network segment. You could get to net1 from net2 using IP addresses, but not back the other way probably.

I want to keep the networks separate with both running DHCP. Is there any way to do this? Im trying to stream from my PC to my Xbox Media Center in case anyone cares.

You can stream from the first LAN to the second.

The relation from the second LAN to the first is like the relation from a LAN to the Internet. I.e. to stream against the second Router's NAT you have to open ports and use remote control, other methods similar to what is used to access a computer from the Internet.

The whole point of having two Networks is to create segregation.

If you want to freely share files what is the point of segregation?

Change the address on router #2 to 192.168.2.1, and set its default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and turn off DHCP so that it will use it from router 1. Everything will see everything.

Now I have a question for you . . . . why are you using two routers? Wouldn't it solve all sorts of problems to just hook the cable from router #1 directly to your computer?

wouldnt i have to set the ip on router 2 to 192.168.168.2 to stay in line with the 192.168.168.1 of the main DHCP router? In which case would i still set router 2's gateway to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.168.1

Thanks!

Just use the standard IP's and change them to what Swampster said. The gateway will be the main routers IP address (whatever you end up using).

Opps . . . my bad!

I was reading the original not too quickly and didn't notice his non-standard main router address. Yes, you are correct, he can either translate my reply, or go back to standard settings.

Out of curiosity, I wonder why the non-standard setting? Was there a specific purpose . . . other than being different?
