Files on NAS marked as Read-Only

I recently moved all my media to a NAS (Shuttle OmniNAS KD20). Now many, but not all, of the files have the Read-Only property set on, which is awkward.

There are basically four situations in play. I have:
- old files that were moved from a local HD to the NAS. These don't seem to be marked RO.
- old files that were moved from a different (backup) NAS to the media NAS. These do seem to be RO.
- new files moved from a network share on a PC to the NAS. These are RO.
- new files (tv shows) recorded by my HTPC to the NAS. These are not RO.

I'm not 100% sure these assumptions are correct but they seem to be.

Any idea what would cause this and how to eliminate it?

I had some permissions screw-ups with my NAS a while back. (File were there, took up space, but couldn't read them, except from this one client computer, which could read but not modify.)

So I SSH'd into the NAS box, and sudo chmod'd the files. *shrug*

Your NAS should have a similar capability. (FreeNAS lets you enter command line commands from a web page. Others need SSH, etc.)

According to some of the stuff I found online about the KD20, there is no SSH capability.
