If you are upgrading a single computer from XP to Vista, you'll want to run the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard from the Vista DVD while booted into XP. Then run the Vista installer.

If you are migrating from one machine running XP to a new machine running Vista, you install Vista on the new machine and then run the Transfer Wizard from that new machine.
