File types versus extensions in 10.6.6

We just migrated to OSX 10.6.6 from 10.5.x and OSX is no longer recognizing the difference between a photoshop EPS and an illustrator EPS - it appears to be relying solely on the file extension.

Any way to fix this?

Note: Mac OS X 10.6 eliminates the use of creator codes in its Launch Services methods for determining the preferred application with which to open a file. Files are opened based on explicit application associations for a specific file, all files of that type, or based on the file extension.

Awesome. For years, Mac users made fun of how 'dumb' Windows was for having to rely on the lowly file extension to know what a file was.
